Hello Professors

My wife and I were on our way home from family Thanks Giving last night and my wife notices the gas gauge falling very rapidly. We had just turned onto a another road when I heard a clunk. Sounded like a rock throwen up off the tire hitting the bottem of the Wagon. She saw the guage fall so we stopped to see if the tank had a hole in it. With all the water dripping off it was hard to tell but there was no gas smell and no rainbow color in the water puddles. We took off and the guage leveled off much lower than it should have been we just filled up. Later it dropped to empty and the light came on so we stopped and filled up (only about 7 gals) so it wasn't empty. The guage stayed on empty most of the trip then started to go back up to about 3/4. This morning it went up to about 3/4 then back down. What could be causing this foating guage. I just replaced the sending unit in September.

I don't have any answers, but I just wanted to comment on your hobbies. I am also into kite flying, Mountain biking and FSJ's! Just thought I would let you know. Good luck with the gauge! Maybe a broken circuit somewhere?

I recently replaced my gas tank skid plate, and when I reassembled everything my fuel guage didn't work -- I replaced the guage two years ago, right after I bought the Jeep.

Anyway, I disconnected the batter and removed the access panel so I could wire-brush the leads to the fuel guage. A little dialectric grease, refit the leads, and it worked fine. If that doesn't do it for you, I'd suggest testing the wires themselves for continuity.

Last night I took the panel cover off and clean the leads up put them back on and it seemed to work correctly. I wanted to pull the unit but I remember someones comment about making one change at a time and see what it does, so I left it at that. I looks like it was a bad connection due to all the water under there form driving. I will have to pick up some of that dialectric grease.

Thanks for the help.

My gage loves to float arounf going from 1/2 to 3/4 when going up hill!!!!

I go by milage until i can get the dash off and clean the connection.........every 100 miles (1/2 a tank) usually for city driving and every 220 for highway......
