Hello,
I have a question. Is the wiring harness different from a 79 CHerokee 360 3spd to an 80 J-10 360 4spd? Reason being is my friend has the 79 cherokee and his fuel gauge don't work. Now on mIne the J-10 the wire going from the sending unit to the adapter on the firewall is pink in color. His pink wire (same location on the adapter) goes in through a hole in the fire wall and goes to the electric brake controler for the trailer. My question is this: Is there anything on the brake controller that needs to be hooked to the fuel gauge? He bought it w/ the brake controller hooked up and it has only been recently that the gauge don't work. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

My gauge was squirrelly before I switched tanks, now it's worthless but low on the priority list. Figured I'd post to get you BTT. How about checking the ground, especially if it's a plastic tank?

I have a 90 GW and my gage was not working properly, and what had happened was that the wire came unplugged from the top of the gas tank.

Take the driver side body mounts off, jack up the body, and check to see if the wire is pluged into its connector on the top of the tank. 90% of the fuel gage FSJ problems I have come across, thats been the solution. I hope thats the case in this situation.

My fuel gauge has mysteriously decided not to work either. This post has reminded me that I need to fix it. Thanks

Mine just stopped working as well. I pulled the gauge cluster and I noticed one of the little metal teeth broke off the back. All the other gauges work, just somehting to keep in mind.

just fixed mine on my 82 a couple weeks ago. It had corroded badly around the sending unit inlet. I just pulled the whole unit and replaced the contacts. My hot was a machine screw that just needed some cleaning and I replaced the little boot thing. The ground needed to be replaced by souldering a new blade to the unit and replacing the wire end. After that it worked great.
BTW, you need some tool that will remove a LARGE plastic nut, mine was probably about 40mm. I used a dead blow hammer, a wooden dowl, a lot of patience, and made sure my battery was disconnected 3 times.( Ive seen what gas fumes and spark can do to a human, and I didn't want that to hapen to my jeep smile.gif
