Should my 89 GW be able to tow a 20 ft runabout up a freeway hill without getting too hot? My temp gauge sits at a little under 220 on the flat. When going up hill, it climbs up close to the red. Usually, the hill flattens out before the red and the temp goes back down to around 220, but last week it went to the top. I pulled over and the coolant was boiling into and past the overflow tank.

New radiator (stock).
New cap.
New thermostat (195).
New upper, lower, and bypass hoses.
Pusher fan on radiator.

I pulled the water pump and shoved a hose into the block hole and water flowed out the other side and through the bypass hose. Pulled the thermostat and water flowed that way also. Tested thermostat. Replaced water pump.

It seems that the pump is pushing water. The fact that the temp goes down on the downgrade indicates that the cooling system is functioning.

The engine is stock. The oil is 10w40 with three parts conventional and one part synthetic oil.

I checked the fan clutch. Nothing is loose. no noise. No wobble or rumble. Turning resistance is noticeable when cold. Fan does not appear to keep spinning after engine is shut down.

The only thing I haven't checked is timing. What should it be? How much difference will advance or retard by a degree or two make?

The boat and trailer weigh about 3000lbs. I can recreate the temp fluctuations without the trailer just by turning up the A/C and doing the same hill a couple of times.

Is the 89 GW just a hot-blooded beast? Am I missing something?

Tranny cooler, a bottle of Water Wetter and a 19 inch 7-blade flex fan rated for 10,000 rpm will make your rig run no hotter than 160-170 degrees. I'd use a 160 thermostat too.

Do you have a fan shroud?
