Selling my 1989 GW.

167K miles. Runs well. Has rust starting in some of the right places, but it's defintiely a good one. Stock engine, with an NP208 transfer case (operates manually from the floor lever), and TFI. Newer brakes, and a recent carb rebuild.

I had a few out-of-staters contact me on Craigslist, so I put together a quicky video to let them hear it run. Unfortunately my camera ran out of memory before I could go underneath. You can check out my amateur video skills at this link.

Here are questions to some of the FAQs:

No overheating. I've run it mostly around town for the past year with a few trips that were about an hour and a half each way. It has run very well every time. I get about 14 mpg at the pump in mixed driving

As for rust, it's starting to do that frame rail rust thing near the gas tank that these things are so well known for. Luckily, it's not at a point of urgency. BJs Offroad sells patch kits for this for about $160. I've always assumed that when the time comes to replace the rear leaf springs (they all eventually need it), I would patch the frame rail while I had the tank dropped. Since the gas tank is still happy, I haven't bothered with it. It also has some body rust around one of the wheels wells.

It has a slow oil leak, but nothing major. It was leaking some transmission fluid up until a few days ago, but I found a tranny cooling line that had a loose ring. So hopefully that has cleared up now. Transmission shifts fine.

Brakes have been gone through over the past year.

Aside from a worn driver's seat and worn cargo area carpet, the interior of this truck is surprisingly original and clean. No interior leaks. And it still has the original headliner to prove it!

I recently had the AC system vacuum tested (passed) and recharged with freon. It blows cold.

To be honest, this Wagoneer is not showroom perfect. That's why I'm not trying to get 6 grand for it. It comes with its share of weekend projects to keep you busy if you're inclined to hunt down the little problems. But it's a good driver that's still pretty solid. If you wanted to make a really nice wagoneer for yourself, this would be a good candidate.

an 89 GW should have a NP229 TC unless someone has swapped it out for a 208

Good point. Yes, it was swapped out by a previous owner. Judging by the tow bar that was mounted on the front when i bought this (and the PO's anecdotes) this waggy spent a lot of time being towed behind the original owner's RV. My guess is that he was not disconnecting he driveshafts like you're supposed to for flat towing. Whatever the case, I hear he went through a couple of the stock transfer cases before his mechanic suggested that he should use a different/older style transfer case. Te transfer case is engaged by the floor lever. It goes from bottom to top: 2hi, 4hi, N, 4low.

I'm in the process of replacing head gaskets on my 94 Chevy 3500 crew cab long bed dually with a 6.5 Td 6wd. The one with the 5 lane turning diameter, too big for a radius. It's a beast. The wife got mad at me the last time she fell out of it. I didn't think about straddling the swale when she exited. Anyway it ain't no Barbie Car. We had and she loved our 91 GW and I can't get another one without making room in the driveway.

Last Friday night, we built a receiver frame for 168 Qt cooler and put it in front receiver. Hink was on his way to a redneck wedding Saturday morning and the 'Ole Mule' was to be the beverage cart. The truck quit and he asked for me to bring gas. After 5 gal it still wouldn't fire. We ended up towing it home and I went to work, carb was not getting fuel so I pulled fuel line and cranked it. got a few pumps of fuel then Nothing. So I figure I might as well redo fuel system while I'm at it. Pulled and cleaned carb figuring floats stuck. Nope, but carb was bone dry and full of crud, Fuel filter, Nope New last weekand had good flow. Inline see thru Filter had some scale but not bad. Great, bad pump, Right? Scavenged pump off blown 258 we just changed out and then found the rest of the problem. Went to draw fuel out of tank line, and nothing, line was blocked. OK!!! blew line back towards tank and got a bath in gas from the return line. Aparently tank far from empty.
Note to self: remove fuel cap prior to back blowing fuel lines.
Then i saw it, Two wires dangling out of HEI cap plug, it shorted out.

AAARRRGGG!!! 2pm Saturday afternoon,OK! I can beat this, called every local source and Closest HEI 6511 in TENN and only ships ground??? Ebay great under $50 but only ships GROUND 2-3 days with shipping Monday. I only have 1 car running with the Wife giving me THAT LOOK Again. I hate that look.

Off Monday, I called API in Cali that would ship overnight that morning, cool running for about $100 by Tuesday night.. Right?? Nope. Called because I didn't get tracking Email at work, Fire Wall? Nope.. Called and they had a problem sending notifications, resent with EST delivery Friday by end of day.

WHAT, your Killing me here..." called back and seems that everything they shipped went UPS Ground. At least I wasn't the only one mad at them.

So i mounted see-thru filter on front side of new/old fuel pump, redid fuel lines, and waited. Looking at "THAT LOOK"
GOT IT !!!! Put in new HEI and wires after work. It fired up on first crank. and didn't stall out. Dialed it in and took around block. WOW!!! Its a real runnner, I had a hand full of tools as Pat walked out, getting her "LOOK" ready. Hink and I took her out to dinner.

6.5 should run tomorrow. or I'm gonna part out or crush it. Either way would like to tow "OLE MULE" home with your/my Waggy after ECI.
The difference between want and have is all in the width of ones wallet.
Have got to sell dually before diesel gets to $5 a gallon. Then Waggy becomes a "Running Spare".
Still haven't figured how to post pictures..

We had a few problems with the Ole Mule, fuel system stuff, like finding a Jellyworm sized chunk of silicone clogging pickup tube in gas tank. put up a few threads on ordeal. Still in quandary with Dually, cracks in heads can be welded at $400 each +parts. It's a cash flow thing.

Hink and I are going to Puddin Creek after work today. I need to vent, The guages dont work after HEI shorted out and the ignition is tied to future light bar switch. On the bright side reverse lights finally work but now stay on. Another plus, I got over 100 miles on under 9 gal fillup.

I'm surprised that Jeep is still for sale. I would have jumped on it, but no way to get to it and get back at that distance.

Hardly. I will eventually get another one. My plans are to find a clean one with a bad motor and drop a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel under the hood.

Niiiiice. I wanna play! I'm gonna get another one, too, when the wife gets out of nursing school (find out this week if she gets in!) I'll either buy first one back from Jake, or find one that's pretty much done already in Texas, Arizona, or NM, fly down, and drive it home. I'm gonna get a ZJ 5.9, too:D

There's one for sale near me (craigslist) that already has a Chebby 350 under the hood. The conversion to a 6.5 liter diesel is already halfway done!

Ah... But I have other things to take care of right now. It'll have to wait.

We got the 6.5 running but has fuel delivery issues now. Now hoping to get it to Soggy Bottom Mud Pit this weekend with FOR SALE sign. Seen a few GW's down here but they think its a collectible car. I guess that they don't understand that "Reserve not met" means No Sale. All but 1 had broken tranny mounts, and no door pull handles on back doors. And what's with that with waggy owners, must be a sign that they really don't want to sell.
Glad it found a good home. Since it was a musician, it should give hm a better understanding of the blues...

Sorry to hear that engine has been giving you so much grief. As for finding a waggy of your own, try putting a wanted ad on craigslist in your area. That's how I found mine. Be specific about what you want (condition, if you want something modded, price, no dealers, etc.) and see what pops up. When I did that, i had two vehicles show up that were not already on CL. Owners had thought about selling them but never got serious until i contacted them.
