I've heard alot about flat-top knuckles. How are they identified and why are they more desirable than other types of steering knuckles?

Go to his mods section and look for Dana 44 high steering. It'll explain a lot...

Go check out River Beast's web site.Go to his section on cross-over sterring. You'll see why they are and why you need them for a big lift.

the knuckle is flat on top, so you can mount new steering arm on it soes you can attach your highsteer to it...if you dont need high steer, you dont need flattop

This is why: WAY BAD steering geometry

The flattop knuckle (machined and tapped for high X-Over steering vs. a FSJ round top knuckle

Thank you everyone!
I was feeling like I should probably know by now what flat top knuckles were. I've learned alot about FSJs from this site by simply reading and watching and seeing what people were doing to their rigs. I figured that eventually I'd learn all about flat top knuckles as well just by observing. But I eventually got impatient and just had to ask!
BTW, great photos, RB!

looks like only passenger side would need to be replaced then? how strong is the steering with the high steer parts added to the passenger knuckle?

You could run the tie-rod above the leaf springs with dual flat-top knuckles with arms. I remember someone also took those rubber-coated "tractor" or "utility" lights from an autoparts store and mounted them on the old steering arms so he had lights that would aim wherever he pointed the tires!
