I finally got my Overhead Console that I pulled from a 89 GW working in my 78 J20!!! It was my fault, I had the lights working but no display, I found the error when I went thru my splices. At first it was reading the right direction and temp. Now it reads the wrong temp and direction. It says "CAL" right next to the temp. So I fixed the variance. Nothing changes. Its about 30 degrees off(colder) and the compass is off i.e im facing SW and it says E. It was reading SW and the right temp for about an hour. Anyone know what the "CAL" stand for?

It stands for calibrate. If I remember right from my '87 Dakota you had to drive in a couple 360s to calibrate the compass.I would assume since the electronics on these are similar tha cal would be similar. The instructions should be in the owner's manual if someone on here has thier's handy. As for the temp,I'm not sure how to calibrate it.Also would you happen to have the wiring schematics to the console?I could sure use them as all I have for now is the lights working.

Coolram: I have 2 versions. The one Kel sent me unedited, and the one I edited with what wires go where. Which one do you need?

Update(30 minutes later): I went in circles(both directions) and the CAL sign is still on but seems to read the right direction. I only get the direction when I first turn it on, when I push the Comp/Temp button I get a blank screen. Other than that after the direction disappears, I have temp and the CAL sign. Temp is reading right now tho smile.gif Do I have to have it in Compass mode then drive in circles? Direction is ok now, but the sign is still on.

I believe you have to have it in Compass mode for it to calibrate. If mccullough(thankyou I've checked your site)has the manual it probably describes the procedure better.I had to do this in my Dakota once(don't ever put a magnetic base antenna on the roof, didn't read the owner's maual warning about this or use my common sense)and a cop stopped me to ask what I was doing, told me he thought I was drunk. If you could email( ilivingston@islc.net ) me your edited version would be helpful.Thankyou both.
