Is there a direct replacement for the speedometer in a '90 Wag that has a trip odometer included? I may have to replace my current speedometer, it is a little bouncy, and would like to have the trip for easy MPG calcs. My wife remembers that her '91 Jeep Sahara had a similar speedo but we are not sure.
Thanks

bouncy speedo is usually the cable. pull the gauge, then pull the inner cable and lightly grease it.

I'll take this opportunity to jump in and ask a question I've had for a while: do we have to use a special speedo cable-type grease, or do other kinds work just as well?

use a non high temp grease. chassis grease would work. don't need a lot.
It's never a bad idea to use the correct lube if you have it.(Speedo Cable Lube) but a light machine oil like 3-in-1 oil or sewing machine oil works fine . As Risto mentioned remove the cable from the sheath, clean it and lube it don't just squirt a bunch of oil down into the sheath. The cable isn't like conventional brake or clutch cable but rather like a long tightly wound spring and the point is to get lube between the spring wraps. You're not trying to lube the cable from wearing on the inside of the sheath so before installing the cable back in the sheath clean off excess oil, you don't want it getting spun off up into the back of the speedo.

X2. Done this on a couple different waggys. Bouncing is not the speedo, but the cable.

Thanks guys. I searched the site and saw a few posts that it was the speedo causing the bouncing. Something about the car sitting for awhile and the magnets causing it to jump. The PO replaced the lower half so I know that end is OK. I will follow your suggestions and work on it.
Now why in the H didn't Jeep install a trip odometer?
Thanks

FYI - Once the instument cluster is removed and the speedo disconnected, you will see the end of the speedo that will spin around. You can actually pull that part out of the cable. It is about 2 feet long. I thought that I had to disconnect something! Well I oiled down the internal spring thing-a-ma-jig with 3-in-1 oil and the big bouncing stopped at high speeds. There is still some bouncing whenever I go over some big bumps like I am in a boat or something.
Thanks

You have cruise control, there is a vss sensor by the front wheel well, from there there is another spedo cable to the t-case - another 3 feet or so.
since your bounce went away, your fine, but the other half could get oiled as well - it just unscrews from the VSS and t-case just like the dash end.
Non cruise rigs have 1 long cable.
I think some have an E-clip to keep them from being pulled thru??? maybe remembering some other cable I have work with.....

Paaaleeease! I drove a real boat! Try a 1981 Lincoln Continental Mark IV 2 door. If I recall it was 18 or 19 feet! I think the only longer 2 door car was the '59 Cadillac.

Drivers or passenger side? I know the PO just replaced the lower half so do you think it would need oiling at this time? That is also why I originally thought it was the speedometer because that section was replaced. I remember on my last Wag the speedo was very smooth and did not bounce at all. This Jeep did sit for a very long time but I do not know for how long.
Thanks

Why yes. Yes I do. You don't? It was standard. Was yours replaced? Are you sure you have a Jeep Grand Wagoneer? You should get that checked out.
Can't take any pictures right now because my dog ate the camera and my phone camera stopped working just this morning!
Just kidding:rolleyes:. Read my first post!
Thanks
