lol... that one is a biytch to do if you don't have the right tools... Use an impact wrench... or better yet, use a helper holding a screwdriver or prybar in the holes bracing it while you pop a hernia... best thing to do if you don't have the power tools or a helper, is try to wedge something through it onto the engine

1st, are you sure you want to use an old flexplate and take the chance it may be stressed from previous use. As you are finding it is no fun pulling the engine or trans to change one. Just something to consider.

An impact style air driven or electric wrench should break the bolts loose. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion as to how to safely stop the crank from rotating if you don't have an impact driver.

The seal in the center you are asking about may be the crank pilot bushing that is used to center the snout of the torque convertor on the crankshaft.

Is this it? If so you need it installed on the engine that will be used with the TH400 trans.

Here's a picture of the stock pilot bushing next to a custom one I had made:

another way to stop the crank from rotating that I jsut thought of... assuming you have more than 1 breaker bars, and 1/2 inch drive sockets, put a socket on the FRONT of the crank, on that nut inside the pulley, put your breaker bar in the socket, and see if there's something you can lever it against while you are at the other end grunting and sweating like a pig to break them bolts loose... :D :P
