Curious if anyone has ever gone on a Mojave Road trip between Needles and Barstow, whether on a sponsored event or independently.

I participated in the opening of the road during the 80's with "Friends of the Mojave Road". But I moved back to CT before it became "official". Someday I hope to get back there and drive it again before I die.

Thanks for the post, it was a good read and now I'm interested in scouting it.

I've taken amboy to national trails a lot to get to needles and laughlin, usually at night and alone, but now this sounds like it could be a fun adventure.

Me and some friends have been planning on taking a trip through the Mojave road, but i've wanted to tackled the dependability of the FSJ before trying to tackle it

Ran it a couple of times back in the day, here's a run report i did from 2001:

Good trail. Quite an easy run (we did it once in a 2wd tahoe), but worth the trip.

Can be done in 3 days, but 4 is less rushed. Too many times we've had to rush through Afton Canyon instead of explore as we were short on time.

I've heard that Soda Springs can be tricky after any recent rains (thin crust, deep muck underneath), but never had a problems when we've crossed

Lots to stop and see and plenty of wild camp areas.

8/10 on the family weekender rating system.

Thanks for sharing that. Brings back memories. And yes, the trail is not challenging in the usual sense, as much as it has significant historical interest. And when traversing the trail, one has to remember women & children bounced around in not-to-comfortable wagons behind oxen back in the day.
