The cherokee i just bought has been sitting for a while. The po says the rearend was slipping and it had a bad piston. The transmission and t case are fine he says. What would cause the rearend to slip??I will be picking the wagon up this evening..What should I do before trying to get this thing to turn over since its been sitting so long.79 Cherokee W/T with 360 and Quadratrac.

Don't know how the diff would be slipping unless you have some major damage to the ring gear? If the rig seems to be slipping quietly I would guess the trans is slipping or if it's making a banging noise it's the chain jumping in the QT? So far as to what to do first before starting it, it just depends how anal you want to get. What "I" would do is at least check the fluids in all the gear boxes for level and water content. If you have a prob with humidity/condensation where you are I'd prolly change all the fluids first...you should do that anyway at least as soon as you get it home. Check the radiator level. Check the air cleaner and make sure it's not a mouse house. I would definitely change the eng oil and pour the last qt over the rockers etc. Pull the plugs and pour some oil in each cyl then roll it over by hand a couple times. Put the plugs back in and remove the coil wire and roll the motor over with the starter till the oil pressure starts coming up. Replace the coil wire, splash some gas in the carb and go for it.

This can be a common identity mistake..... if the rearend felt like it was slipping, it could be the QT unit center diff that is shot. If the brakecones within the QT center diff are slipping, this will give the same affect .... high RPMS with a slight grabbing be felt.

QT are notorious for going bad due to improper maintenance... such as adding gear oil instead of QT fluid. The special QT fluid is ESSENTIAL for life in a BW1305/1339 Quadratrac unit. It has special addatives to lubricate the brakecones and center diff for proper operation.

Also... make sure the front driveshaft is still on.... AND there are no manual hubs in place. QT's cannot use manual hubs. The QT is a FULL-TIME unit...meaning no 2WD capabilities.

IF the front shaft is off OR the front axle has manual hubs unlocked.... this could be the slipping. Lock the hubs (if equipped with a front shaft) and try it once you get it running. If it still acts up, trying removing the front shaft and locking the QT unit in E-Drive....

Another way to check the QT is by applying a torque qrench to the yoke nuts on the output shafts. Leave one shaft one... either one and apply torque to the other yoke nut....anything below 60 ft lbs to break it free can mean trouble for the QT unit itself.

Thsi should get you started... good luck
