Is it likely to have any engine damage from a good backfire? My choke has been sticking, and last night when I got home and turned off my rig, BANG!!!!!!!!!. sounded like a 12 ga. going off. Everything started back up ok but I've never heard a backfire that loud.

If your running a Holley carb, theres a good possibilty that you could have blown out the power valve. If it still starts and runs like nothing happened then it probably didnt.

Mine backfires like that too sometimes, might be a sign of a worn timing chain... I pretty sure thats why mine does it.

...Dieseling or after-run and back-firing can also be caused by some of the following.
...A lot of carburetors are equipped with anti dieseling solenoids and it could be out of adjustment or disconnected. Fuel – air mix could be to rich. Idle adjustments may set to rich. The timing may be set with to much advance.
… Carbon is also a big promoter of dieseling, back-firing and pinging (pre-ignition) and a poor running engine.
... Here’s a link to the gentle and successful way I have been keeping carbon out of my FSJ for 18 years

Thanks guys. Don S I think you might be right about running too rich. That makes sense being the choke was still causing the engine to rev high. Hey 4dwuds, not running holley but stock motorcrap has a power valve. How can you tell if it's blown?
