I have an 85 GW with a torqflite 999 (?) transmission. Occasionally when shifting from park to reverse or drive nothing happens. It is like the transmission is in neutral. I shift back to park, then back to the desired gear and it shifts into gear. Sometimes I have to shift to park several times before it shifts into gear.
This is not an everytime problem, only happpens maybe 1 time out of 5,but always inconvient. Has anyone suffered through this before?
Added info. I changed the transmission fluid and filter about 6000 miles ago, in May. Transmission worked fine for about 4 months after filter change. Currently fluid is reddish brown, not red.
Any suggestions helpfull (other than get new vehicle; wife already suggested that).

I would change the fluid again, the brownish color is some dirt and wear the filter is not picking up. Mine did the same thing. Might be wrong about it but its not a bad thing to do before paying for a rebuild.

I'd check over your linkage and see if you have any slop in the system. Have someone shift through the gears while you're lying underneath (car not running) and see if the lever on the side of the tranny is moving the way it should. Also, that should be a torqueflite 727.

Unless it is an I6 258 w/out the tow package, they came with the torqueflite 999. That is what is in my fathers 85 GW.

I bought it used (big suprise, huh). Came with a 360 (since replaced with rebuild) and apparantly a 999.
Thanks for the info so far. Still hoping for the "I had that problem and fixed it by replacing a $0.38 part" reply, though.

Greg,
Hammers cost alot more that $0.38.
In the morning I have to let my GW warm up in neutral (where the tranny pumps fluid) for a bit before I leave. If I don't, I usually can't grab drive. I have a 727, but the 999 may need the same?
Good luck

Ditto Terry Mc's comment re shifting into neutral and idling. You can do a search on a no yo yo valve (or is it no yoyo).
Are you sure you have the 999 behind the 360? I thought most of the 360's came with the 727 and only the 258's came with the 999, but I've been wrong before.

sounds like the shift linkage has to much play in it or the shift arm on the trans is loose change the fluid again and check the linkage also you should adjust the bands and the no yo-yo kit will stop the converter from draining when you park the truck so when you start it up and put in gear it will take off like a th400

Did a search of this forum for no yo-yo and no yoyo kit. Nothing came up. Could someone elaborate on a "no yo-yo kit".

the $0.38 part you're looking for might be the bushing that holds the linkage. there is a horizontal shaft that sticks into a bracket on the side of the bellhousing. there is supposed to be a plastic bushing in the hole to hold the bar. if it is gone you can get one at the dealer, not sure about the $0.38 though :D

the no yo-yo kit can be had from a parts store/ tranny shop that sell shift kits it has gil younger's face on the box .........gary you remember gil younger (MR.TRANSMISSION from the 60's) he also started trans-go

There is a clamp screw on your linkage where the pivot arm attaches to the tranny shift input at the valve body. If that's loose, it will not shift all the way into gear all the time, but your linkage will look as if it's moving just fine. You should be able to feel it in your shift lever though. If there's slop (very little resistance) for more than about 1/4" when shifting out of park, I would check to make sure that's tight. Hope it helps.
Good Luck,
Greg

my dad had the same problem in his chevy before he put the Cummins in. it was a th350 and one of the valves on the valve body was sticking.
