Quick question, Since I smoked the A.C condeser installing the electric fan this summer, can I cut the belts that feed the A.C. compressor and the smog pump. I would think this would give a bit more power and mpg? Would I have to block off anything for the smog pump?

Thanks

Don't know, never seen a belt on a smog pump. Actually half the vehicles around here don't have any of the smog stuff on them. Hope they don't start Cali testing out here, half the vehicles would be fined. I say if it is in tune and not smokeing it passes.

I think your alternator belt will need to be changed. Understand that if you cut the smog pump belt, the pump WILL most likely seize after a short time.

I looked at it and the alternator is in the clear just 2 belts going to the A.C. and the smog pump

dude, that thing on top of the smog pump is the power steering pump. the ac compressor, the alt and the water pump are driven by their own set of belts. unless jeep changed their system for the final edition

Cut and send me the compressor...my compressor is fried and I have been running it belt-less for 5 years....but if you send me the compressor, then I will have a funciontingAC again and at least half of us can be cool in the summer :D

'91, thanks for the correction. I couldn't rightly remember the belt routing, I just remembered the Autozone people asking me 'A/C or no A/C' when I bought an alternator belt a few months ago.

If you are looking at the engine from the front, the left hand side has the A.C compressor and below it the smog pump. The right hand side has the alternator and the power steering pump. Either that or I have sucked too many fumes. That is a possibility though!

I guess the 91 wag is different. On my 1981 360 the compressor is on top of the alternator on the passenger side and the power steering pump is on top of the smog pump on the drivers side. In any case if you take your smog pump out of operation you will put a lot of stress on the smog check valves. You might as well take the whole air injection system off if you don't need it. Just my two cents

I wonder which year they changed. I sure would like one of the inner fenders that has the battery tray on the drivers side. It would make a great dual battery setup.

Wow, I guess they made some changes........ My 87/88 is A/C~Alt on Pass & PS and smog on Drivers side. Batt is on pass side. Guess I need to look a little closer at the junk yard....

Where are the radiator and wiper-fluid resevoirs on this truck? That occupies about all of the driver's-side fender on most FSJ's from '74-'90.

Can you get a shot of this underhood setup? I highly doubt that Jeep would have re-engineered the entire underhood setup of the GW for just a single model year, but I've also learned enough to "never say never".

Also, where do the hoses for the AIR rails run on your truck? If they swapped the alternator and AIR pump, that would route the rubber hoses right by the hot exhaust manifolds on the passenger-side, and require a relocation of the diverter valve to that side as well.
