Harmonic Balancer

Does anyone know how far down(on) the crankshaft the Harmonic balancer for a AMC 401 V-8 is supposed to go? I have the specs that says tighten to 90FTLBS but it doesnt seem that the balancer is pulling down flush with the seal in the timing chain cover--Its about a 1/4-1/2 inch shy of being flush with the seal. I mean the seal is riding on the harmonic balancer seal surface just doesnt seem to be pulling down all the way--Is there any other referance point to check for proper pull down/on? Thanks, Kirk

It shouldn't be flush with the seal; the seal should ride on the outer journal surface of the balancer snout. It's bottomed when the inside washer surface is about even with the end of the crank. I believe it actually bottoms on the crank gear/oil-slinger, so those two surfaces may not be exactly even, but they'll be close.
