84 GW 360:
Replaced my fuel sending unit cuz I thought it was bad. Turns out it was. But now the gauge reads empty all the time. Figured I broke it when I was shorting the fuel sending wire to ground. So I found a *Brand New* fuel gauge and installed it. Same thing - still on empty.

Any suggestions? Resistance across the 2 gauge terminals is about 20 ohms - both origianl and new one. Noticed on the back of the instrument cluster circuit board a "wafer" that is below the fuel gauge terminals. Looks like a stick of gum. Measured resistance on this puppy is 0 ohms. Is this a related component? What is it?

Thanks in advance. Hoping one day to catch up to all you guys with your absolutely fine SJ's...

Is your temp gauge working?
I don't know what the CVR looks like on the later rigs but that stip of gum thing sounds like it. The CVR(Constant Voltage Regulator) drops the voltage to the temp and fuel gauges to 5v or so. It it's fried neither gauge will work. If both of yours are inop you'll need to buy a new temp gauge. It has the CVR as part of it. If your temp gauge does work I'd check that the fuel sending unit is grounded.

Let me know if you need the "new" guage. I have a couple of extras.

the stick of gum is just a jumper, my '83 has one,and my '84 has a wire soldierd to each pin.
It is not the cvr

The CVR is part of the temp gauge, and the onlyt way to replace it is to replace the entire temp gauge. It cost me $55 for a new temp gauge from the dealer.
