i've now spent 4 hours trying to tune my new 1405 edebrock 4 barrel carburator. i have 2 revolutions on the left screw and 1,5 revolution on the right one. that seems to be the best combination. it runs good when at idle speed, but when i get in the need of power (2nd gear of automatic transmission, generally), it stutters and it lacks power. i've tried adding and removing 1/4's of revolutions left and right, but with no success. would someone be so kind to tell me what combination you all use. the engine is a stock 401, except for the carb and intake manifold.
i count the revolutions from the very bottom (when the spring is completely compressed) of the adjusting points.
thanks on forehand,
daniel

1.5 turns should be fairly close to the correct idle mixture setting. Verify that you have plugged any unused vacume ports. The only other thing that I could recommend, is on the two 401's that I converted to after market intakes and carburetors, I've had to add a 1" phenolic spacer to increase the plenum volume. I also put an alumnium heat shield between the intake and spacer on mine, because I had some fuel boilong problems. Not sure if that helps any. What intake are you using?

Those are the idle adjustment screws and have nothing to do with anything other than idle. You need to go get a spring and rod kit for the carb and try different weight springs and maybe different rods.

You need an Edelbrock Performer Calibration kit or Carter AFB Strip Kit. It has an assortment of metering rods, jets and springs. The Carter Strip kit is better than the Edel kit but since they are not made anymore they can be hard to find. Summit Racing and Jeg's both carry the Edel kits and may have acces to the Carter Strip kit.

The spring changes the rate at which the fuel shot is delivered to the carb as you accelerate. The rods adjust the amount of fuel delivered off of idle to either richen or lean the fuel mixure. You can check edelbrock for the differemt rod and spring sizes here:
