Sorry to hear that - been there, done that and broke down in the middle of Alabama in July with the GW full of family.
There are a few options, maybe more if you don't mind making a few mods along the way. Search the boneyard for a 228 or a 208. When I broke down the only option within 300 miles was a 207 - I had to get a driveshaft made but other than that it was a painless install. Aside from wait time, it took 2 hours wrench time start to finish.
Good luck,
Greg

If u need to move the truck, use low, it will still move int Low. I have toasted a VC too, and going on a second one. I'd upgrade to a 208, or at least a 228, so that this wont happen again. good luck.

If I swap out a 208 does it have to from a Jeep to be a direct bolt up? or can I use one from a chevy?

What does one look like????
I have asked in the past about making some type of spool to take it's place. You will lose the "full time capability" but you lose it with a 208 too.
I'm willing to give it a shot if someone has and old one I can take a look at.

Here is a place that sell rebuilts.
Personally, I love my 229. It is in 4wd 4 months out of the year. I like the shift on the fly and full time mode. But i don't do much off roading.web page (http://www.transfercases.com/)

If he replaces his 229 with a 208, does that mean he can put lock out hubs up front?

Don't use the NP228; just ask any 1986 owner. I was lucky enough to find a NP208 at a local junkyard. I haven't done the conversion yet, but I am looking forward to having the NP208 in my Jeep.
I read a few posts where people had suggested welding the two shafts together to sort create a NP208 out of a NP228 or NP229. I have always heard that the cases were the same except for the fact that NP228 used an open diff, NP229 used a VC, and NP208 had a solid shaft. So why not have a local machine shop make a solid shaft to replace the tow shafts and the VC?
