I was out Junk-yarding today and found a Dana 20 in a 72 Wagoneer. I also ran across a J4000 pickup in the same yard. I think maybe a 74-76(????)
The transfer case in the pickup was selectable 2H, 4H, N, and 4L. The pattern on the selector knob was a U shape. The output on the t-case was on the far right-hand side (the drive shaft was only a couple inches away from the frame). Can anybody tell me what that t-case is? Is it a Dana 18?

Should I grab that one or the Dana 20 for my 79 Wagoneer? I believe both of the junkyard jeeps have TH400 trannys in from of them (as mine does).

Also, If I go with a part time t-case, Can I leave the front hubs alone or do I need to go to Lockable hubs? They are currently engaged full time with my stock Quadra-Trac.

Thanks in advance.

They're both D20's. FSJ's never ran D18's from the factory. If The Wag and truck's are both behind AT's they're identical.
If you do go with the part-time D20 "I" would add unlocking hubs so the front diff isn't turned by the wheels and turning is a bit easier when in 2WD but you don't have to add unlocking hubs.
If hubs are added...lock them once a month or so for a few miles(in 2WD is fine) so they stay lubed.

Cool. I didn't know the D20 came offset like that. How hard are the hubs to install? Will I need to change the "entire" hub (meaning rotor and all)? Sorry, I've never had the dust caps off of mine yet, I don't know what the set up looks like....

I will need to grab the trans to transfer case adapter too, correct?

OK, disregard my last reply. I starting searching the forum and found all the info I need on the swap.

I knew I loved coming here for a good reason.. :D

The D20 was never an offset. The rear axle had a slight off set but the D20 itself had a rear center output  . Can you describe the t-case that you saw more? Thanks.

I think he's talking about the front shaft, though it's hard to know for sure.

I thought of that too, but he said they look different from each other.

No, it was definately the rear shaft too. It was hard to get a good look at it. It was definately offset right/right AMC 360 engine, TH400 trans, and part time selectable TCase. Could the guy have put a Chevy case on the TH400?

The only t-case that I can think of that is right/right drop, gear driven, part time is the D18. Someone must have swapped it in.

I think I'll just buy a CJ and give the Waggy to the wife to drive tongue.gif
