i am thinking of putting a pto on my j20 with the t18 tranny in it, a friend of mine has a 78 ford 1/2 ton with a pto on his 4 speed. my question is will that pto pump bolt into my tranny straight from his? if it doesnt, where is a good place to find a used pto? what kinds of other trucks would be a staight swap? ive heard that fords run t18's also, is this true?are they only in 3/4 tons?

thanks in advance for the help

Yes, certain Fords also run the t-18 trans. But I'm in the same boat as you, I also want a pto but have no clue what it looks like or where to get one.

Nope they run off the Transmision. I have an original PTO that was installed by Jeep on a plow truck. This is mounted on a T18 and is huge I have not decided if I want to sell it or not.......I will have to think about it I guess.

I havent ever looked at how a PTO works. Do any of you have a picture? Or can you describe it. Does it go between the tranny and t-case? Or does it hook up to that little side port on the tranny?

Guy's the pto could come off either the tranny or t/case depending on the setup. manual 4spd and higher (more gears, like a 6 or 7 spd) generaly come off the tranny, wearas 3spd manuals and autos come off the t/case. The D18, D20, NP205, and even the orig Q/Trac could have a pto installed. To confuse the issue even further some large autos (like allison's) had provisions for a pto and some of them had lockouts so they would not shift. A pto driven pump on a fire truck that does not have gear lockout will lift you right off the ground if you are holding an 11/2" hose in your hands and the tranny shifts.
