Sorry about those measurments in my original post. Here are the correct numbers Side Gear clearance=.002" gears are above cover by .005". The cover has some minor scoring in the inside where the gears spin none of the scratches exceed .004 deep(if that). My question is according to my research the gears are supposed to be below(gear end clearance)the cover by .006 and mine are above the cover by .005 is the gasket going to make this up? By the way thanks guys for the info on the stainless inserts-- pretty pricey!! If I remember right they used to just sell the insert and gears--guess they werent making the money that way. Any info/advice on my cover appreciated.
thanks again, Kirk

Are you putting new gears in your old cover or are these the measurements you took as you disassembled your old one. Those gaskets are super thin and I don't think they will make up that much difference. I don't quite remember how mine were set up when I built it, but I know I have not had any problems out of it..

The gears stick out of the cover. Usually by .004 - .005". Measure the gasket you will be using. If it's around .006 - .008", then you'll end up with a .001- .003" gear end clearance, which is good.

I have been rebuilding this covers for almost 10 years now, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the reply's OK, new info----My side clearance(gear to cover clearance) is right on the edge of specs(.002)--service manual says between .0005-.0025 with .0005 the prefered. The gears look good so if anything the cover is worn a little. All of the AMC's I have built have had the problem of good oil pressure when cold but once heated up it drops to about 15-20 LBS at Idle some times even lower depending on how hot the engine is running. The service manual specificaly states that this condition is caused by excessive gear to body clearances. Anyway with this new $2000+ 401 long block I dont want to take any chances. According to my measurements the gasket IS going to make up the differance with gear end clearance but the side gear clearance has now got me worried. But would like to save the 300 bucks to spend on other things for the engine if I can. Suggestions??? Thanks, Kirk
