I have an 85 360 that is chewing though distributor drive gears. It appears to me that the problem is a result of excessive camshaft endplay. With the timing cover off, the camshaft has about 1/8-1/4 inch endplay. How do you adjust the endplay? The camshaft timing gear is flat on the back (engine side). Should there be a lip on there to compensate for some of the endplay?

There is no adjustment, the Cam lobes are ground at angles as to keep the cam centered in the block by the pressure of the valve train, if the cam is walking and chewing up gears, Cam and lifters need to be replaced.
