Ok, after serious thinking and a little borrowing of ideas from other rigs, I've come up with a fairly simple template for fabricating a shackle flip bracket. Please forgive my drawing, its not to scale and its not really all that detailed, but it gives you the general idea. I still havent purchased my FSJ yet, so I didn't include measurements. As soon as I get some cash together, I'll get my FSJ and let you know how the shackle flip turns out! I figure its always good to plan ahead. Please let me know what you think! http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/FSJ/shacklebracket
thanks!

I have Autocad, Generic Cadd, 3D Drafting, and Designer, Wish I had Unigraphics. We are talking 3d solids with hidden line removal and full color stress analysis as well as mass analysis here (and a spaceball for controling movement of the part on the screen, way to cool)

Hey newbie.. I live on the Southwest part of town.. have you heard of Phil Collums Jeeps? He's got quite a few wags.. but his prices are not exactly the greatest... he's not as expensive as Wagonmaster, but I'm sure you can land one a little cheaper... keep checking out his site though for a deal.. he's always got a full sized around somewhere... I *almost* sold him mine.. but he's a cheap buyer and a not-so-cheap seller!
The address is : http://jeepsbyautoquest.com
That flip bracket looks *very* good! I'd take a set if they're durable! It's nice to see someone local putting stuff together! Hey! you and I should get together some time so I can show you my coil conversion idea! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

Snakeyes_TX,
Yeah, I've been to autoquest a few times. My girlfriend's dad bought a real nice YJ from them. So you've got a coil conversion idea....hmm...I bet you could flex like a mother with coils all-around. I'd definitely like to hear about it! I live on the far west side (Katy). And yeah, I'd love to hook up sometime!
Peace,

Awesome! Do you know Dick Hollinger out there? He's part of a club I'm in .. Texas 4x4.. I'm the only FSJ in Southeast Texas as far as I know... the only others are in Longview's chapter... check em out!
www.tx4x4.org (http://www.tx4x4.org)
Also, I just ran through his ads.. he's got a pretty sweet 75 or 76 Cherokee Cheif I think it was.. 2-door.. red and white.. needs a little motor work, but otherwise sounds like a decent rig.. 1,500 or 1,900 bucks.. can't exactly remember.. but Dayum! If it was only a Wide track!
If I had a narrow track 2-door.. it'd have to hit the floor http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/tongue.gif I know its sacrilidge, but if I drop anything, I'm going to have something that no one else has, and still keep the springs in case I grow tired of being so low.. besides, the sky is what my truck is for! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

Snakeyes,
Nope, I'm afraid I don't know him. I've been involved with the street scene since I was a kid, so this 4x4 stuff is all new to me. $1500 sounds pretty good to me, but I'm probably going to need a few months before I buy, I'm saving up for tuition this summer! I'm hoping that I can find near-stock jeep that someone just wants to unload. The main thing I'm looking for is a good body. I've had too many cars with rust to spend all my time fighting to get the body fixed properly.
As for the shackle flip brackets, I'm going to send my design to a machine shop to be fabbed, and I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm also going to be designing the front spring mount (of the rear springs) but it would help if I had a vehicle to make the proper measurements. Anyway, I'm sure they'll be sturdy, the design is very similar to Off Road Design's flip kit for the Blazer. Now if I can just get some money together....

BTW, do you know of a good machine shop in H-town that could fab this design?
Also, WT or NT, doesn't matter to me!

Yeah, I got outta the street scene about 4 years ago... just got too ... Cop-infested! Rankin nowadays is horrible! Kids coming out with stock cars and their soccer-mom vans.. its sad! I know how the tuition thing goes.. its putting a slight delay in my spring over wishes.
There's a machine shop.. not exactly sure how good they are, but they sure have been in business an awefully long time... they're at the intersection where Westpark and Alief Clodine converge. It's a really small place... right by Reese Elementary school.. I think its Reese.. but there's a school a short distance away from this place.. there's a Yellow 70's Chevy C-10 pick-up with a white top always parked up front.. I can scrounge up the number if I pass by there again, but I'm sure you've got an idea of where I'm talking about! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
If you need a guinea-pig-rig (gee.. that sounds kinda neat) to try these mounts on, I'd donate mine if I can keep em afterwards http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif Course I'd pay for them... I could use the extra lift... my rear sags a little bit cause the blocks are shorter than my front lift by about an inch.

OK, not that there is anything wrong with your design, but why not make it simpler? Heres 2 ways I have thought of doin this....
1st, use a spring hanger, just like the front springs use, and weld it under the factory rear shackle hanger. This along with a drop bracket for the front of the spring would provide a lot of lift. For bit less lift, use CJ style shackles and hangers, welded to the bottom of the factory shackle mounts...

I kinda like the idea of only dropping the back.. especially with lift... it'll ease the driveline angle with the extra caster in the rear... since there is no steering to mess with back there, I'm pretty sure the extra few degrees would be quite beneficial!

VERY nice!!!!! I like the design....I need to get into cad more http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
With that style of bracket, you will need to remove the old OEM mounting system completely..is this inversion mount going to keep the factory hieght, or is it to ad lift as well? Also if this design does add height, you will need to fab another bracket for the front mount to keep the spring level from from to rear as to not have the springs flexing at an angle...plus it will change your pinion angle alot...
Mine adds height and I made my kit a "bolt-on" application to allow a choice to revert back if the desire was ever there... that was my intention.
You have GREAT plans, I would like to see it done..this would give FSJers more options for suspension mods...

I too got garbage under Netscape; for some reason, Explorer properly interprets the JPG file, and Angelfire won't let you directly open up the image in Netscape.

River beast,
Yeah, it's going to drop the rear mount 4-5" just like yours did. I know the drawing isn't very good, but the "L" part of the bracket will bolt to the frame. So the top of the shackle will roughly be the same height as the bottom of the frame. (a lot like yours is) As for the front, I really haven't put much thought into it yet... I need to get my vehicle before I can accurately make a design. I'm wanting 7" of lift for the rear, so I'm definitely going to modify the front hangar.
BTW what gauge steel did you use for your brackets?
With my shackle dropped 5" and the front mount dropped another 5" or so I should be close to 7" of lift -- 5+5+4.5(shackle length)/2 roughly 7 1/4"
As for making the design simpler, I thought about it, but structural rigidity and soundness is so important, I'd rather have it as close to bulletproof as possible. I also figure that making it bolt-on would give me the chance to test it out, and if it works well, then great, maybe I can pass the plans along to help others, if it doesn't turn out so well, then I can always take it off.
If you guys can tell me how to post the drawing, I'll post it. Sorry, my html skills stink too! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
thanks,
Gary (newbie)
***I added another visual aid to show exactly how it will work and where it goes in relation to ther frame and spring. Check the link again www.angelfire.com/tx5/FSJ/shacklebracket (http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/FSJ/shacklebracket)

Newbie,
I used 3.5" box steel that was 1/4" thick... giving the inner dimensions of 3". I cut off the seamed side of the box steel and made the mods to the remaining three sides to make my mounts....
To post images... use the "img" and "/img" tags at the beginning of the pic replacing the " " with [ ] no spaces should be left...
