I just tore down the front end of my 84 GW and put on a new timing chain (both gears)new timing cover, new oil pump gears, new oil pressure spring, and removed the air conditioner. Everything went real good. Paid attention to details the whole way along. I know I got the fuel pump gear on the cam facing the right way. I had some problems getting the fuel pump back on. The only reason I keep coming back to fuel pump is because it is the only thing affected by my work that is capable of making noise. It sounds like a loud lifter, or hella exhaust leak.
I did this work in answer to the 20 pounds of oil pressure at 55mph less than 5 idling. Now I have over 40 hot at idle. Just gotta isolate causes for this noise. Any ideas.

I agree that it sounds like your pump, you say that you had trouble putting it back on but you did not say what kind of trouble. Was it aligned wrong? Maybe the spring arm is out of alignment with the pushrod. If you cannot find the problem, remove the pump, use a block off plate from a big block chevy and install an electric.

I'm no master mechanic. Awhile back on this forum I believe, someone had mentioned about a hole in new timing chains gear that doesn't get punched out at the factory. If this hole isn't punched out like it should wouldn't that keep oil from circulating atop the front cam lobe...the lobe that does the mechanical workings of the fuel pump?
Just a thought.
I have since replaced my mechanical fuel pump with an electric. It seems that my front lobe is flat, although the cam works fine.
Do a search on timing chain replacement threads to find the topic.

O.k., Lindel has heard about the tread I'm refering to.
He also can explain it a lot better also:

I'm reminded of a couple years ago when I replaced my water pump. When I put the new pump on and started the engine, there was a loud noise from the front. I found that the clearence between the back of the impeller and the inside of the timing cover was insufficient, causing the impeller to scrape against the timing cover, making the noise. I had to pull the pump off and add a couple of pump gaskets to get the neccessary clearance. Since you had to remove your water pump, you might consider this possibilty.
But maybe you should try this first: if you do suspect the fuel pump, perhaps you could pull the pump away from the timing cover and start the engine. This would remove the fuel pump from the equation, and the engine will run a few minutes with the fuel that's in the carb. You will probably get some oil coming out of the fuel pump opening, but you should know right away if the noise stops or not.
