Hi all... have a problem with my power tailgate on my '78 Cherokee.

I have searched through the tech section on the website and found some good
stuff for getting at the motor and testing it, all of which I plan to do
this weekend. However, the problem I have is that it quit working while the
window was in the down position. When I remove the access panel, I can't
get to anything because the window is in the way. When I try to put my
hands in under the bottom lip of the window and raise the glass manually, I
can only get it to raise maybe half an inch. I don't want to try to force
it for fear of breaking the glass somehow, or seperating it from the track
that I assume holds it in place.

Any help? It's tough to even see in the door to see whats happening because
the previous owner applied a fairly heavy tint to the glass, so I can only
see the inside edge.

TIA

Tony Rio

I had the same problem, I think I got fed up and just drilled my own access holes over the spots where the pins are in the bottom that hold the frame to the track. That helped out a lot, but I don't know if everyone would do that. Then I just covered the holes with rubber plugs.

It's probably worse to have the window stuck in the up position, because you wouldn't be able to get the tailgate down to work on it. Make sure you support the glass as you pull it out to work on. HTH.

did the same as Dan. imho,i still think the problem is with the safety switch on the upper left corner. the access holes greatly speed working on the clips
