Good to be back, eh!!!
So last week I was home (an hour from where I go to school) and running my J-10 around to recharge the battery as I ran it down cranking on a clogged fuel filter. I replaced the filter, she cranked up wonderfully and I went off. I drove through the country for 20 mins around 45-60 mph and then headed to the highway to run up to 70. I pulled out of the intersection and easily gunned it up to 70. I looked at the gauged and the oil pressure was pegged above 80 and as I watched the temp slowly moved past normal and seconds later pegged as well. I shut down and coasted off the road. popped the hood, hardly any coolant out of the overflow and the radiator was not steaming over or anything as i could still touch it breeifly with no burn. I waited around for a few minutes and turned on the heat full blast cranked up and went. Gauges normal for 2 minutes then pegged. I went home 15 miles at two minute intervals, although I was pretty sure I had an electrical problem. Anyway, as a precaution I changed the thermostat and radiator cap. The truck ran fine the whole time. Never seemed too hot. Now the temp gauge runs a little colder, but the oil gauge fluctuates randomly and eventally just reads zero.
Any thoughts? I am thinking the oil pressure sensor wire is shorting or broken in the jacket. Anybody ever trace these wires?

if an electrical gauge fluctuates in a "flickering" manner, it almost has to be an electrical problem. neither the oil pressure nor the engine temp can change that fast. keep checking the harness/wires. good luck

I did this once.... trying to "charge" a low battery by driving around...I wound up frying the AMP meter... It's only rated to 60 amps. This can be easliy fried by doing the "charge by driving" method on a super low battery.

Yopu may not have fried it but may have heated it up enuf to affect the circuits within the cluster. FYI use a charger for future reference... I learned the hard way... don't do the same.

I did use the charger, but the gauge was still a little low so I drove it to death I guess. Well, I feel a lot better now. I have another gauge set ready to go in and maybe I'll track done the problem behind my non-functional gas gauge. So I guess the voltage regulator got fried? My ammeter seemed to be the only unaffected thing.

Thanks,

Daniel

OH this happened to me a month ago!
What happened on mine was that there was an exhaust leak in the back of the manifold (one of those big plugs melted) that burned ALL of the wires and the same thing was happening, also check The wires near the manifold that was also burnt (lots of rewiring I did that day.

If that is not the problem..sorry…
