Okay...I took a visit today at Dave's Salvage Yard.
I dunno if I met Dave or not, but spoke with a super nice fellow in a Bobcat style equipment (Cat brand?) and he gave me permission to look around.

I took a few pics and placed them here in my Webshots account:
http://rides.webshots.com/album/581494096kMtEdT

I only discovered two J4000 and a one Wagoneer.
grimjeeper73, if you know that Dave has more FSJ, I missed them.
It was a fairly large place.

Here is one of J4000's:
Note the grill and the badge.

Note the rear bumper

4 speed (T18 or T98?) and Dana 20

Old Cars
What I saw shocked me!
In the state of Indiana...an auto salvage yard of old cars!
Wow...it was like a dream!
Most all of the salvage yards in NE Indiana, crush cars that reach about 10 years old.

I saw five 1964-6 model Mustangs in a row and then saw two others in different locations.

My first car was a 1968 Thunderbird with a 429 Thunderjet
Way too much car for a 16 year male that was a learning to drive.
The 11:1 compression required high octane fuel.

The red one had no engine, but the blue has the worst body, but still had its 429.

The one thing I saw the most of were trucks!
Lots of work trucks...3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks.
Many dually trucks and some I am sure were equipped with Dana60 front axles
Check out the front axle of the late 80's Ford F-something...the cab was burnt, but this axle is massive.

Yes, I liked it very much!
I saw many things that I enjoyed and got my mind spinning.
I began to wonder about new, different and fun projects...like that '68 Ford Thunderbird...street rod or rat rod?
I saw an AMC Ambassador 2 door hard top...another Boulevard Bruiser?
Dave had lots of super kewl things, like boats and RVs.
I saw a 16' auto trailer with some serious issues, but with a welder and some steel, very repairable.
The best part, no mud and a beautiful day looking at it.
I need to find some time to make a day trip back to this yard and then buy something to support Dave's efforts in saving this stuff.

Thank you for sharing this place with us!

Yes, was kinda what I thought as well.
Totally blown away!

I dunno about any engines.
Both the J4000 had 360 for they sporting 2BBL carbs and both manual transmissions.
The Wagoneer was an I6 but looked to be stripped of parts.
I did not look under the hood of the AMC Ambassador 2 door hard top.
Who knows...might have been a 401?
There was a white AMC Ambassador 4 door that did not have an engine.

If your engine is blown, rod out of the side of the block or something like that, then maybe, one of these J4000 engines would work for you.
However, if not, I think I would seek something fresher and maybe newer.
These trucks were early 70's model (J4000), had older style ignition and the trucks looked to have had a hard life.
Having said that...I do not know anything about them other than what I saw.
I could be all wrong..they maybe a fine running engine.
I would doubt Dave, owner of the yard, knows much about the history of these engines, other than how much he wants for them.

If you make a deal for one, let me know, for I would drive down and help.

I've got a rod knocking in the 401 I just got. Was looking for something I could rop in and putter around in while I rebuild it. Nothing huge.
I heard tell of a 258 floating around locally. I'll see if I can track it down play with a I6 for a bit :D

Bummer to hear about the 401.
IMHO, the engines in these J4000 have been sitting for a while and my guess no one knows what condition they are in or if they even run.

However, going from a AMC V8 to an I6 is a lot of work
Even more work if you want to go from an V8 to an I6 back to a V8
More still if you are going from a V8 with a manual transmission to an I6 with a manual transmission and then back to a fresh, hot, 401 with a manual transmission.

This topic has been discussed here to great detail.
While the big stuff seems to bolt up...many, many smaller issues make this a lot of work.
Especially of you are looking for a temporary solution to run as you rebuild your 401.
I would recommend you study this before you drop some $$$ on an I6

If fact, I feel so strongly about this, I would purchase of these early 70 model 360 from Dave's Yard before I would travel down the I6 path.
I hope this was helpful and not harmful/hurtful

Always helpful man, thanks for the info.
I already have a good running 360. But I had it earmarked for the j-10.
I suppose I could just swap it in.
