What's the easy way to take a oil pan down?
Will it come down without removing the y-pipe?. I need to replace the gasket.
By the way my cam lifter instal went great!!
Thanks to all you experts!!

Pretty straight forward, loosen all the pan bolts and drop it down. You may have to pry it loose after dropping the bolts because the gasket is usually stuck pretty good. Usually a good rap with a rubber mallet will loosen it enough to pull it down. I would suggest that while you got it down that you replace the rear main seal also, they are notorious for leaking and you already got most the work done to replace it. the seals are cheap. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif Check out the tech section, lots of good info there.

Starter does not have to come off to drop the pan. If i recall correctly the pan will come down without removing the y-pipe but i haven't crawled under mine in awhile and don't recall for sure.

The oil pans on FSJs are so easy to take down compared to other trucks I've owned. I took mine down to change the rear mains a few weeks ago. It took all of two hours beginning to end. Just loosen the bolts, pull the pan down. I didn't have to loosen the motor mounts, but I did jack the truck a bit to relax the space between the engine and the front axle. Other than that, no problem, probably the easiest oil pan I've ever done.
Good luck,
Greg

I had to remove the starter to get to the bolts above the starter. I forget to mention that earlier. The y-pipe doesn't have to come down if you lift the engine.

I've done this three times in the last year... when I was stock, I had to pull the Y-pipe down... a BUNCH. it doesn't go far so you'll exchange some pretty choice words when you wrestle that pan out.
The starter has to come out to get the back three bolts out in that general area, unless you and your tools are some miracle contortionisits http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
If you do the rear main, and you pull that crank bolt out... prepare for the mose god-awful smell in the world... almsot as bad as crude oil itself.. just thought I'd warn ya! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

I Had do this a couple months ago. I did most of all the listed above and also had to remove the sway bar. These pre 84-85 guy's don't have that on thier rigs. Loosen Y-pipe, remove starter, loosen motor mount bolts, remove pan. The hardest part was getting the oil pump pickup into alignment and the rest of the pan aligned with a fresh gasket and sealent on it.

Another tip is to support the frame (front cross member) on jack stands so that your front suspension hangs down. This will give you a lot more room to work, especially when it comes to maneuvering around the oil pickup (which you can't see until you get the pan off, but it gets hung up on a chamber in the pan).
