View Full Version : lockout hubs
Hi i currently purchased a 86 grand wagoneer front dana 44. it does not have lockout hubs but i was wandering if i could get lock out hubs for it. Some guy at Warn Industries said that i couldnt do it. But i read of people diong the conversion.

They'll fit, but they wouldn't do you much good. The front axle and driveshaft don't soak up that much power when you're in 2wd, and if you shift into 4wd when the hubs are unlocked, you won't get any engine power to the wheels and you'll roll when you put it into Park.

I put a set on my truck to stop the driveshaft from spinning. I have so much lift on that I was getting some vibrations due to pinion angle. The hubs solved that problem. The vibration is gone unless I need to use the fourwheel drive at any speed over 55 which is basically never!!!

I think you may have just confused him, I know you did me. When you put lock outs in a full time front axle, all you do is make it a part time axle. Anytime you want to use the 4x4 you will have to get out and lock in the hubs. But yes they will work. I done it on my 86 D44 that I use to own. But Bob is right, you dont gain that much if any fuel mileage.

You're right; the reason the companies tell you they won't work, however, is due to liability reasons. This is also outlined in the owner's manual.
With a full-time 4wd with some kind of central differential, when you put the tranny in Park, the truck doesn't roll because the front and rear driveshafts are trying to turn the differential gears in different directions. Now, if you have it in 4wd and the hubs are unlocked, there is nothing to prevent the rear shaft from spinning freely, so the truck simply rolls when the driver is thinking it should stay put.
Of course, if you are aware of it and only engage 4wd once the hubs are locked, you can add the hubs. Preventing front driveline vibrations is a good reason for adding such hubs.
that rolling in park when in fourwheel drive with the hubs unlocked wont apply to me, i think. I have a jeep wrangler with a manuel tranny. I would have 2 wheel low, but thats not the reason i wanted them. Thanks for the replies

I have them on my waggy. But I only put them on for convienence. Because I flat tow a lot. Saves me a whopping 10 minutes of disconnecting the front driveshaft. LOL And since I did that I did not realize I had a very slight vibration at around 80 mph. When unlocked it is gone.
I bet they say it doesn't work because the 86 only came with the full time t-case. With the full time case, you can't unlock the hubs or you'll burn out your viscous coupling in about 2 seconds. If it had a 2WD mode, it could work.
The phone jockey at Warn just looks up in the application chart to see if it's listed. If not, he says it doesn't work.
It's still a D44 so the Warn hub will work. Just not with the tcase on the 86.

i get a kick out of the little jeep guys swapping in our factory equipment. tongue.gif its alot easier for you guys to swap in 44s out of a fsj than it is for us fsj guys to find front d60s and 70s :(
its, cool tho. like the guys said, the lockouts will work. it takes the same as any internal mount,1/2 ton chevy...
for what its worth, tho,i really dont care for my warns. im gonna put my spicer ones back on. if you want a really strong lockout, find a set of factory spicers
raping poor fsj's for what? a YJ or TJ?

hate to say it redface.gif but i ended up with mine cause it was spossed to be a parts rig. got tired of breaking IFS parts in my amc eagle, and it was going to be parts for solid axle amc eagle smile.gif
buuuuuut,i was sittin in it one day,and thot"man this thing is cool, betcha i could get it runnin..."
now may other rigs have donated their parts to it and the eagle still sits with a bad front hub bearing, spun rear hub,and worn out IFS. ill do somethin with him someday... maybe put him on a chero or blazer frame...
also,i wont criticize for putting our factory equipment under a yj,cause i do the same thing posting on other pages :D whenever i go to the k5 page and post questions bout gm axles,or put stuff in the wanted section,i never mention that im robbing a gm product of its parts to install under a jeep ;) tongue.gif
