Fellow FSJers,

Do any of you 401 owners know how many mpg you are getting with your trucks? I am curious as I am trying to get a line on one and swap it out with my aging and low pressure 360. I understand it's silly to ask about something like this when talking about bigger engines, but living in "High-Gas-Tax,Snowy-Plover-Lovin'" Santa Barbara County  , gas prices start becoming somewhat of a consideration. How is the 401 mileage vs the 360, or do the power gains just totally outweigh the extra gas cost (if there is any)? Appreciate your input on this, thanks.

Anytime I ever ran a 401 I never really noticed a gain or a loss in MPG. However there is a noticeable power differance....So if you get more power for the same gas I guess its better. :D

I get 10-11 pretty consistently. I have an Edelbrock 1406 on a Holley 300Z manifold, 31X10.50's and 2.73 gears. I drive it hard too :D

I get about 12 on the highway. I've never really actually checked, this is just my quick "brain math" at work. It is much better than the 7 mpg I was getting with my old 230,000 mile 2 barrel 360.

Ditto the above. I get 10 city, 12 highway.

Same here except I got over 13 mpg once. Then I lifted it and would love to see the double digits again. It still hangs around 8-9 though.

On my '80 Cherokee Larado, running an Offy 360 degree manifold w/Carter 625 on a balanced 9.5:1 401 I ran a steady 10-11. Motor dyno was 300hp/500ft lbs torque @2,500 rpm with stock exhaust manifolds. Figure on putting in dual tanks and save yourself some walking, when the gauge says empty your already coastin'

my 401 gets 8 to 9 on 91 octane, its sorta built and I like to drive it semi aggressively, but the closer to 55 mph I get, the better the mileage. go figure. btw -th400, 31.5" actual tire diameter and 3.73:1 gears. IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IF I'M IN 4X OR 2X!!!!!!
