I just returned from a 1400 ml round trip in my jeep . And as much as i love my 89' waggy with it's 360 .$600 fuel bill was very hard to swallow . So how valid are the story's of taking a cummins with a 727 auto , swap out the tail piece of the tranny and it bolt right in ? i understand That theres a lot of little things need to change or swapped , Mostly interested in the tranny -transfer case compatability . Thanks

There's more to it than "bolts right in". If you're thinking of the cummins with a 727 that would be 1990 and earlier. I had a cummins 727 and didn't like the fact that there is no overdrive. I swapped it out for a 5 speed.
I would not want to run the stock tc of the waggy either. Go ahead and get a 205 and do it right while you're doing it. You also need to consider the whole drivetrain; axles, driveshafts, etc. For the 6bt you're gonna need some Dana 60' at least.
You may want to consider the 4bt.
There's a diesel section on the board here and I'm sure the mods will move this thread.

Find a Cummins 727 with a NP205 together. If your looking for easy and cheap slap, a Chevy 6.5 non-turbo with an adapter to your current trany (OK now let the Cummins crowd rebut);)

I just discovered the page with diesel swaps .very cool .Thanks And yes so far it's looking very costly . Way over any fuel savings . But i am interrested in all your thoughts . Even GM!!! lol . I just really dont want to be tied to local trips at home due to fuel costs .
I have thought of regearing ,headers , TBI, and locking hubs in hopes for 16mph

heres a combo that works great:
get a cummins diesel 12v - $1200 (theres 2 right now in my zipcode)
Ford small block ZF 5-speed $200 at Pull-n-Save (look for f250's w/351)
Shop around for a Ford adapter plate, they are less expensive than the chevys - around $350
Get a Jeep 208 t-case and swap in a 31 spline input gear from a bronco 208 - you will have to chamfer the lip on the gear a bit to get it to mate exactly
Total - $1750
$250 for steel and bolts
Rest is elbow grease.
Oh, for the cooling - use one of the following:
Mercedes diesel (77-85) aluminium radiator with custom hoses and a burp tank from the mercedes
Motor mounts are fairly simple - 3 wedges and weld.
Tools needed - 115v welder, chop saw, drill press, hand tools

I've helped do one and am in the process of watching a second being done. It IS easy as long as you don't want it ready for Monday rush hour. There are currently 3 of these running around in my neighbourhood. One in a M715, two in waggies.

I know it's not hard. I'm currently doing a 79 chief. You have any pics of the M715. I'd like to see that one.

In my humble opinion, investing in an overdrive transmission would be money well spent.
