View Full Version : Emergency lockout light on?

today I decided to fix the panel lights in my 74 Cherokee and to my amazement I have a Emergency Lock out light that has never worked until today. My question is, "Is this light always on?" Driving home tonight I found that it was on. So I stopped, thinking I was adding 20 years on to the wear of my transfer box each mile I went, and switched the lockout. The light then became brighter. I switched it off and the light dimmed to its previous glow. I switched off my headlights and it stayed on. Is this normal? If so I think I'll just take it out because It's hard not to tell that you're in lockout when you turn. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks. Rog

Could it be caused by background light from one of the other dash bulbs? If you were actually engaged in full-lock mode, you would definitely know when you turn, because it would bind up so tight that it would be nearly impossible to turn the vehicle. I never have had the light problem that you are experiencing, though.

Well.. not that I ever had it, but even on my 86 there was a light on my dash that said 4-Lock. MY old 228 never was made to "lock" so I don't understand why that light was in there... it never came on either. My 208 doesn't lock either.. and there's no electric plugs on there. But that light was on super dim with both cases anyway. I think its normal.

Besides, if you got a quadratrac... dontcha gotta throw that E-drive switch to make it "lock" ? if you're concerned about it locking up... check all the vacuum connections to that switch for a leak. Otherwise.. I doubt it'd lock on you! Also, wouldn't the E-drive light come on too?

It does get brighter when I engage the lock but it is a bright dim with it off. It's no big deal but I was just wondering. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
