Hello FSJ'ers:)

Getting a 80 - 82 Cherro with front end damage, no engine or gbx, but amc 20 and d44 with disc's.....Whoooo Hooooo $150.00 US $300.00 Aus.

What I would like to know is will the swap from my D30 with drum brakes be a fairly simple swap to the new d44 with discs?

Thanks guys for any input.

Cheers GT67

Does the new front axle have the vacuum-disconect fitting coming out of the diff housing?

You do realize that the post 80's are driver's side drop front differential?? Your d30 should be passenger side drop. :(

Sycho15 what are the vacume tubes for?

Porchpiggy you are a very naughty boy.... scared me half to death, but an easy misunderstanding:)

GlennTX Well picked out man, Im glad yopu are on the ball, I would have wandered around thinking about what Prochpiggy said and all sad;(

Hahaha but all is good now, the only thing missing is the rh locking hub, no biggy.

So all should be fairly straight forward as far as I can tell, do you agree? all things being as they should!

i think you may have missed PP's point. the out put for the front driveshaft on the 71 is on the right. the front diff is on the right. in 80, jeep went to a left hand diff to accomodate the new process t/case. this is in US jeeps, it may have taken them longer to make the change elsewhere. but that is what to look for, which side the front diffs are on.

From '80-85, I believe, the Jeeps with "quadra-trac" had a vacuum disconect system in the differential. I don't know if you can disable it, fixed in the "engaged" position, or what. I just remember looking like crazy to find one without that feature when getting GW axles for my YJ. If it's got manual hubs on it you've got nothing to worry about, but it if has drive-flanges you might want to look twice.

Just the '83-'84 Selectracs had the vacuum-disconnect axle. The Quadratracs, even the newer NP-219's, never used the disconnect.

Jeep in Australia kept the right-side drop transfer-case into the 1980 model year on its FSJ's, so if it's an '80 assembled in Australia, you may be in luck.

Ok, so you are going to check for the proper differential pumpkin location.

Now, on to the rest of it.

Here in the states, the early trucks had narrower springs than the later 1974 and up trucks. Those springs were mounted on top of the axle on my J4000 pickup. I don't know if the Wagoneer springs were so arranged on the early trucks. The springs on the later trucks were mounted under the axle. So, the spring perches on the newer axle will be wider than the early truck's and mounted under the axle.

Also, the later axle's disc brakes used a different hose from the frame to the wheel. You may need to change your front brake lines or come up with an adapter. The brakes distribution block is different because the front discs take more fluid to opereate than the old drums, which is why the master cylinders are different too. Then there is the difference in wheel bolt patterns. The early trucks had 5 wheel lugs on a 5 1/2" circle and the later trucks use 6 wheel lugs. The Dana44 pinion shaft sticks out farther than the Dana30 so your front driveshaft may need to be shortened just a bit.

That's all I can come up with.
