I've probably wasted a total of 8-10 hours now over more than one attempt to replac the piece of stainless that goes along the top of the windshield (outer). How does one get it to stay?

I believe there were 2 different types of w/s gasket used- one for those with the ss moulding and those without. If yours originally didn't have the ss moulding, it might not be possible to use it. On the gasket with the ss moulding, there is a slot that the moulding slides into.

J4GRAND Is right there were two windshield seals used. Unless yours has the groove pictured below it will be a tough job to get it on to stay. If your seal is like the PIC I posted, then it is a matter of getting it to slide into the grooves. If the seal has been stretched or is hard and dry chances are the chrome will not stay in place. If the chrome is bent it will also be a nightmare to get it to stay. I put the top strip in first then the sides then the two bottom trims then fight with the corner pieces. Dish soap on the seal helps a lot. I usually do this job ALONE, and no Kids in hearing range.......It can be very upsetting getting the chrome on.....Often thought of just painting the seal Silver!!!! Pic is big so I put in in a link.Windshield Chrome Install (http://images.andale.com/f2/116/106/4651773/1023464296582_Windsheildcrhome.JPG)

Good thing the AC doesn't work and I ride with the windows down. Twice I had to reach out the window and catch mine! I finally just took it off and now it is in the closet. One day I might use screws to put it on.
