I found this truck at a semi-local salvage yard. I don't know anything about Dodges or Cummins. I'm looking at this truck as a body swap candidate for my Chief. I've cut and rewelded a truck frame before to get a shorter wheelbase and that seems like a lot less work than swapping everything into/onto the Jeep frame, also, it allows me to drive the Chief while I get this other chassis ready to accept the body. I can fit a rolling chassis into my barn to work on during the winter, but I cannot fit a full size vehicle (door height, even with roller wheels).

So would this truck be a good candidate? From the data tag it appears to have a D70 rear, D60 front. I believe this would be a 12v 1st gen Cummins? Is the transmission a decent unit? What transfer case should I expect to find? (couldn't get under the truck in the yard.)

He will sell the whole truck to me, which ran when he put it in the yard (scrapped for body damage) for $1500 - which is cheaper than any Cummins I've seen out of a truck and for sale, as long as I bring him back the body to scrap.

As a side note, he also had these sitting out there. Pics of 2, but he had a third with either a flatbed or a dump bed, single wheel. Thinking about buying two from him, one looks complete less motor, the other is missing a few parts but nothing drastic.

Nice find. Does the 12v have a stick or auto? That's an awesome platefirm to build off of. Only issue with that 12v is that's it's not innercooled. Must be a 89 or 90 model. Easy fix though. If you don't buy it let me know where it's at. I may go get it lol

It could be, I asked him what year it was since all those Dodges look the same to me, and he thought it was a 93. I just reread the tag. It's a 205 and a manual 5 speed.

If it's a '93 somebody swapped the pre '91.5 intake setup on it. The trans should be a Getrag 5 speed. Pretty good trans, some guys swear by them and some guys say they are junk.

Oh and the rear axle is a Dana 70U not as strong as a Dana 70. It's gears are very similar to a Dana 60 in size and strength.

The transmission is a Getrag 360 (G360) and the transfercase is an NP205 (29 spline input).

The truck as stated is not a 93. It is a 89-91.5 if the motor is original. 1991 was a split year when intercooling was introduced in these models. The non intercooled motors was larger injectors (9mm vs 7mm for ICd versions).

Adding an intercooler isnt tough.

How much does the yard want for that M715 tailgate??!!!!

I can inquire on the tailgate.

It is a great deal. Buy it if you can.

Nah...that would be poor donor...lot of issues to overcome.
I'd recommend you pass on this.
....now where in WI is this yard at? HAHAHAHAHA

Sounds like a great deal.
What I think is great...is you are getting a running donor.
Not just a long block on a pallet that you will then need to run down accessories and a zillion other parts.
For me, it's all the little nickel and dime parts that hurt a project.
A running donor has all the pieces/parts to make a running drivetrain in your Jeep.

This is why I bought my Diesel powered van...running donor.

I would jump on that as well. Complete drivetrain, one tons, and as the Pig Smith mentioned, its the small parts that kill you. I am finishing up my second Cummins conversion. The accessories and small parts have cost more than the motor, trans, clutch, etc both times......and I play in the expensive end of the pool.

Dodge M37 if I recall correctly. And definitely jump on that Cummins.

Thats a good deal. Get the cummins truck and the 715 and combine the two. The Dodge is a M37, lots smaller than a 715. You could put a cummins 6bt in it but it would be lots of work where it would slip right in the 715.

Great donor, not only because you get a fantastic drivetrain IMO, but all the little bits that can be pulled from the donor that would cost a ton sourcing without the Dodge.

I'm biased of course, my swap halfway done!

And would love to get my hands on that 715!!

That will be a great setup! I would not stress myself with "the need" for an intercooler. While they are awesome if you have the time and money, those trucks run great just like this one is setup from the factory! Good luck!
