View Full Version : Not Charging Battery
OK, I've put in a new alternator, voltage regulator and battery and I still don't get full charge to the battery or electical system. There is enough juice to start, run the headlights and run the motor, but the power windows, turn signals, heater and windshield wipers run really slow when the engine is running. Everthing was fine until about a week ago. Wondering if any one has some ideas before I get out the multi-meter and become frustrated.
You could have got a bad alternator. I've replaced mine 3 times in one month before.
Well I had the guys at the parts store bench test it before I took it home. I'm thinking it could be as simlpe as the wire coming off the alt being bad.
I'd check the belt and make sure it's tight and then the connections. I think there's two or three different alternator voltage's. so you might need a bigger one unlest you got the biggest one. that's what I had to do.

Make sure you check the connections to the voltage regualtor too.
I went through 2 batteries trying to find my charging problem. The wire coming from the alt appeared ok but was not snug to the voltage regulator. Pushed it on and all better. Guess wal mart didn't have to replace my battery after all!
It could also be a loss of voltage through your wires, and/or a bad ground. It's at least worth the 5 minutes to clean all the terminals and the frame/engine and engine/battery grounds. If that doesn't help, spend the $20 at the parts store and buy all new heavy-duty cables.

Update: I put the old voltage regulator back in and all is fine. The new voltage regulator is a POS. My Jeep is now in tip top shape(until something else goes wrong).
