It's been a long time since I've had a carbureted vehicle and simple concepts like this one escape my brain...

Thanks,

Factory specs are for "brand new/everything in mfg spec" motors. On old/used motors I adv the timing till she pings under load and then back it off a bit. That works best for over all running. If it's best for mpg's etc...I have no idea but runs better that way and I've been doing that 35 years(yikes, I'm almost as old as the blind webtv guy in NC....just kidding GEMOBX http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif on non-computer rigs and so far so good.

For most of our rigs I would go with the advice given above. Most of the time our engines are high mileage and if you set them to factory spec it may not be enough. Advanceing the timeing a little gives the fuel more of a chance to burn, creating less pollution. If it fires to late you wind up pumping unburned gas out the exhaust pipe, our rigs don't do very well in that department anyway so might as well not add to the problem. AT the price of gas today you might as well get the most out of it! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've had it far enough advanced to cause the starter to labor but did not hear pinging...I know that it's not alway's easy to hear but I had to set it around 10deg to get it cranking.

Maybe the starter needs to be rebuilt?

I've noticed the milage on other vehicles will be better the futher you can advance the dist. Ive got mine set @8btdc so I can run reg gas and no ping (ping is bad ugh!!)
I will give up efficiency for longevity.
