Anyone thinking of dates yet?

we usually try it hit right before EJS. We were a little close this year, but most we saw were 4 wheelers out on the trail and got to see a few of the factory concept wheelers rolling in early. Trails and areas are closing left and right, Moab is fast losing it's playground appeal with all the fun areas closing, but then again there is still PLENTY to do up there to make it worth the trip.

Regardless of what you see on the Moab section subject line for this thread, the dates are set as follows:
April 18, 19 & 20 (Wed, Thu, Fri) with optional Saturday the 21st for those who can stay.

thank you

I'll take you up on that offer. :D

I've just moved down from rainy WA, any tips/requirements for tackling Moab? Ive got a stock '72 J4000 with D44's front and rear and the selectrac rear end.

Excellent.

I was beginning to think Moab was a no hitter.

BhamFSJ, where are you located now? You can go some places in Moab with a stock rig but most trails demand some higher ground clearance. The positrack in the back will be helpful around Moab with 32-33" tires. With the flared fenders, you can go bigger tires on trucks than Waggys before you have to lift. Go through older posts from Moab section and see the pictures to give you an idea what kind of trails we get on there.

I'm down in the Salt Lake City area now; Layton, UT to be specific. I'm hoping to get a trip down to Moab to hit Dome Plateau mid/late september to get my feelers out for the area. I've got an idea of how I'd like my build to go, but its all based on Washington State wheeling. Something tells me it's gonna be a bit different down here, haha.

If anyone is interested in joining on a Dome Plateau run, lemme know via either PM or this thread. If we can get enough interest, I'll throw up a full blown thread dedicated to it!

April sounds great, but I'm going to get mad if I do 3 years in a ROW without hitting slick rock. No more stupid narrow trails. :grumble: (it was fun this spring though, just teasin). I had the best camping experience ever in my life this year, it was worth the rock rash I got on Hey Joe.

Count me and my GF in.

Dunno if we are taking the J10 or the Waggy.

Kinda leaning towards the waggy because it has more room, but I dunno if I trust the engine... The J10 is always 100% ready for an extended trip, but no room since it's a truggy on 42's.

Well I was thinking about camping, then going into town to shower up ever couple of days. That's what we usually do.

But if everyone is lodging, that is cool too. If we are lodging, then I will almost certainly take the J10 and then climb over some big rocks :D

Well, I blew the outer axle shaft on my wagoneer over the weekend. It has a life time warranty so I should be good there but it's going to take up to 8 weeks to process the claim. It looks like I'm out.

Ouch!

Outer shafts are pretty universal, unless you have a really custom setup. I could bring you a couple of outers if you want. I also have a ujoint tool that makes pressing the ujoints much easier.

Gambler68

Camping isn't much easier..I noticed ALL the sites were filled up, even the remote ones. I ended up doing a bit of guerrilla camping way out somewhere I won't mention :) I'm sure someone saw my fire, but it would have taken a helicopter to find me by it :D I'd plan on lodging..watch out for bedbugs :P

It's not so much the availability of the shaft. It the warranty process. The website says it may take 8 weeks to process.

srobertsfsj
03-02-2012, 07:45 AM
lol, very true, i have done Moab half a dozen times or so ,carb'd, in three different FSJ's. What I should have said is that I was planning on taking this year off but I am excited about doing the TBI swap and if I can get it done and tuned before Moab I may go to test it out. I was hoping to do my SOA/SF too but I am having trouble finding some parts and I don't have all the parts yet.

Blake
03-02-2012, 07:57 AM
Cool!

Well I hope you make it! Would be cool to meet ya and drive there with ya!

What parts do you need?

srobertsfsj
03-02-2012, 08:18 AM
The part I am having the hardest time finding is axle shafts for my HP D44. I have an 8-lug setup from a 78 F-250 that I want to swap in while I am doing the SOA/SF but it didn't come with the front axle shafts.

The other missing parts are just waiting on funds:

High steer arms
Drag link and tie rod for high steer
D60 missing all brake parts (was thinking of going disc in the rear)
8-lug rims

Well I actually have all of those parts, but I would have to strip my waggy to give them go ya. That FSJPARTS guy has the HP D44 shafts. He wants $150 plus shipping for them.

You can make the drag link out of DOM and use some ES2010L and ES2010R TRE's, assuming you get some arms off ebay made for chevy 1 ton.

I'm prolly gonna go with discs on the waggy soon and will give you the stock D60 brakes if you want them.

Can't help you with rims (well I do have a set of crappy 8 lug rollers...)

I will be hitting the yards on Saturday, looking for those shafts. If I find them, I would loan 'em out to ya.

srobertsfsj
03-02-2012, 10:02 AM
Funny you mention FSJPARTS. I already PM'd him and he wasn't sure if he was going to part or not. I haven't heard from him since. Hoping he will :)

Thanks for the offer on the brakes, if I haven't found any by the time you convert I might take you up on that. Rims are fairly cheap so I will probably wait until I get close to doing the SOA/SF. Question for ya, do you know if 15" rims will work on these axles? I believe a stock F250 8-lug was 16". Would save me some serious $ if I dont have to buy new tires too.

Unless a miracle happens and I win the lotto I doubt I will have the SOA/SF done before Moab but I will definitely have it done before Ouray. I plan on selling my 6" Hell Creek springs to help offset some of the cost. Right now I am concentrating my efforts on the TBI since I have pretty much all the parts.

Blake
03-02-2012, 10:16 AM
15" rims on 8 lug axles - I dunno. Those ford HP D44's have some MASSIVE dual piston calipers that you would have to grind on to fit 15's. I run 17" rims so I don't have to worry about it.

I sure hope you make it - would be nice to have someone to roll with. I dunno how many trips the 'ole J10 has left in her. She's been rode VERY hard and put up VERY wet :drivin:

Is anyone doing any repairs/mods to their rigs for this trip?

I am :)

Posted a thread over in the offroad section that I need to update. Building a rear traction bar. We just got done welding in new spring perches because the old ones were SHOT. Bent all to heck. Also replacing the rear disk pads and greasing the rear wheel bearings. The rear is also getting new diff oil. I inspected the 5.38 gears and detroit and they all passed. No chunks of metal and no cracks :) Gotta love the trusty 14 bolt.

Also planning to get some new front shocks. I'm thinking about some bilsteins with remote reservoir if funds allow.

Other than that, doing some engine tuning and will go over the rest of the assembly to see if anything else needs work....

3.5 weeks to go :drivin:

I dunno - never ran Pritchett. It sounds pretty tough though.

I used to run a set of 42" IROK BIAS on the J10. They drove fine once warmed up and 'round'. Took A LOT to balance them though.

I completed the rear traction bar, painted all the tubing/frame, changed fluids, tuned the Holley TA, fixed some wiring issues. The old Honcho is ready to roll :fsj:

Starting work on my 5x8 trailer today. Replacing the rotten OSB with some expanded metal. Also taking measurements and will try to fit my street bike on there along with the J10 cab. I'm thinking that the bike will come in handy if something happens to the J10 and I need to get parts

As a driver of the mountains in a tow truck I have knowledge of this....Colorado chain laws only apply to heavy and commercial vehicles. Any time the passes get too bad to that chains would be required on a passenger cars and trucks they just close it and catch up on plowing. They keep up on it very well due to the ski areas would cry like a baby that dropped its lollipop. Hope it helps.

Blake
04-13-2012, 09:00 AM
I've towed snowmobiles on big enclosed trailers all over Colorado during the worst (best) conditions. Over all the major passes such as Loveland, Vail, Berthoud, etc.

Don't worry about it. Take it easy, drive reasonable, keep plenty of room in between you and car in front and use lower gears when descending the passes.

If you have snow chains, then great. Use 'em only if it's really bad.

Besides - they close the passes and make folks wait while they plow anyway. I bet it won't be bad at all.

I'm kinda bummed at the lack of participation, but so be it. We will have a BLAST!

Any ideas what a bare cab weighs?

I'd go but my jeep needs all new ball joints, spring bushings, a brake line installed, power steering pump and box, a spring hanger welded, and a oil change. I'd ignore all that if I had the money for gas :P :P Savin' it for Ouray! Hey keep in mind the flare sections are fairly large, I left you lots of material to play with.

Welcome Patryk.

In years past, the FSJ group has used the City Market grocery parking lot to stage for the trails. Usually meet up starting at 8am and try to hit the road for a trail head by 9. There is gas available there. It is across the main drag from the Big Horn Lodge and a little bit north. The bigger the group, the longer we usually hang at the lot waiting for people. Since our group is small, this hopefully will not be an issue.

I am also camping at the canyon lands, but won't be there until Wednesday night.

As for camping, if you can rough it up, south of Moab airport there a road on the right "mill canyon rd", cross the train tracks, and take a left after 1/2 mile, stay left, cross a small stream, the dirt road "cortez mine rd" will now parallel the highway... there are a few sites on spurs going up the side of the mountain.

A few roads in that area have been designated as mountain bike only.

A few years ago it started to be mandatory to have some sort of portable toilet... plastic seat with attach plastic bag... should do it.

Good view, but bad if it gets windy, your tent will fill up with sand.

Just about ready. New 35" General Grabbers. Trimmed another 1.5 to 2" sheet metal around fender openings. Got the extra inch of lift in back and 1" wheel spacers on. The 2" blocks were replaced with 3". This levels the GW back out. Went and pounded the hill out behind our house and it felt pretty darn good. The carb is running so nice I think I am done except for some foam to seal off the rear fenders. Later I will look at getting that tightened up with some sheet metal. :fsj:

That's a great spot to camp, there's a few spots across the creek from the road shortly after the switchbacks that are pretty nice. Never had any issues with having the dog there.

Yes, very nice to chat with you Flint!

We (GF and I) are very much looking forward to the trip. We've been messing with the new sand rail the past couple of days then I suddenly realized this trip is only a couple of days away  Backed the J10 into the garage and started the packing process tonight. It takes some very creative packing to take a truggy on a trip like this.

Well we got a lot of the J10 packed up. Still more to do though...

What you don't see in these pics (and not in the cab) all on the rear is the following;

2 gallons of antifreeze
2 quarts of P/S fluid
1 new can of grease
2 quarts of motor oil
1 quart of diff oil
Complete set of front D60 shafts with ujoints
Left/Right front D60 knuckles
spare D60 lockout hubs
various bearings, hoses, belts, matched dizzy/cam gear, misc spares
bubba rope, tow strap, several clevises (D rings).
2 spare throttle cables (used)
tent/sleeping bags/blankets/pillows/air mattress
a ton of tools

I will add more junk tomorrow, including clothes, 1000watt amp/12" sub/CB, etc

Can you tell that I'm excited :D
