Was fartin around the Edel. page since I'm kicking around the idea of upgrading mani and carb to 4v and was wondering what mani and carb did you go with. I would like to do without the egr if I can so I'd like the 2131. But I noticed that the 1406 carb doesn't support the evap canister. Will this be a hinderance on my 84GW? Can I just do without the connection to the evap and egr, or am I gonna have to bite the bullet and get the stuff with the emissions crap?

it really depends on 2 things: do you care whether or not your ride has all the required emissions stuff on it? and what type of inspections are required in your area. the engine will run just fine without all the extra crap on it, if it is set up correctly. mine does!

The 1405 is the manual choke. The 1406 is the electric choke one. I went with the 1405 and installed a choke cable. If you want to get rid of your emissions equip. then go with the none egr manifold. With no engine mods the 600 cfm 1405/1406 is just fine.

I have the old RB4 intakes on both my Wag and CJ using a 600 cfm Holley. If you go with a Holley, go with a manual choke as Holleys electric choke leaves a lot to be desired. I am converting mine to manual chokes. I do not run any emission stuff except the PCV system.

I had mine in the shop to check the HC's and fix some other things. What I did is there is one connection from the stock. It is the Bowl vent tube it runs from the cannister. I plugged it. The shop I took it to hooked it up the sniff test and said it would pass with flying colors. And it runs great too. So the carb does not need it nor does it have a hook up for it and by plugging it your emissions will pass as long as it is tuned correctly.

I just finished up putting on the performer w/o egr, also mounted a Holley 650 double pumper, also changed to a 360 air filter. From stock to this. I'm never going back, as soon as I dialed the Holley in, it was instant gratification. Next I guess it will be the MSD, and then maybe a super lift. :D

With 191K, 3 valve jobs and 1 complete rebuild I have run my 87GW with emissions and for the last 80K, without. If your state has a loophole I say go for abGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleyely no emissions (dump the cat converter and everything) and you will not be disappointed. Glance at the sig for the rest.

You really have to mess around with the holley ALOT to make it run right, at least that's been my experience with those carbs on my 67 Pontiac. Especially on a 4x4 (due to the extreme angles we sometimes get to), I'd use carter or edelbrock afb and tuning will be alot easier. Carters are esentially the same carb, but cheaper in the Summit catalog. My buddy bought a new edelbrock carb from pep boys for his 69 Firebird and it ran great right out of the box. I wish I could say that for my holley, I'm still swapping jets, accelerator pumps and cams, secondary springs, etc. to banish the infamous "holley bog"

I have to say that I'm lovin' the 600cfm vacuum-secondary Holley I've got on my '78. The choke even works (much better than the 750cfm piece I had on there before), and with the offroad needle-n-seats in both bowls I've had no stalling or stumbling.
The trick, I found, for getting rid of the off-idle bog (horrible on my 750, just bad on my 600) was a blue pump cam on the second screw hole. With a #32 shooter in there, acceleration is seamless.
The only problem I have to settle is the choke when the truck is 1/2-3/4 warm; it's on either too much or too little, I can't tell which, but some fiddling with the index will settle that.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. Luckily, my state has no emissions (ah, my Ole Kentucky home is definitely home sweet home). But, it looks as though we will be moving to either VA or NC in the somewhat near future. Anybody know if they do visual inspections in these states?

I have the 1405 setup (see my sig.), one thing to note is that Edelbrock describes the 1405 as a 'performance' oriented carb while the 1406 is an 'efficiency' oriented carb. That's why I chose the 1405 with the add-on electric choke kit. After having done these mods, I would never go back.
As for the evap canister, when you remove the emissions equipment it leaves the vent lines from the fuel tank in the charcoal canister. I am not sure what effect/leaks this has, but I disconnected everything else and left the vent lines on the canister. Maybe someone else will know what solutions there are to this.

I've got the 2131 Edelbrock manifold (non-EGR), with the 1406 carb. Now that I've got it tuned to the engine, it is excellent. I think that Holley's are a lot easier to tune, but need a little more TLC than the Edelbrock's. I'm very happy with the setup that I've got.

Hey Brown Bear,
I have a 1406 Edelbrock that I ran on my Wag for about a year that is for sale. I'm just up the road from you too. Go to Louisville much?
It ran just fine on mine until I bored the 401 out to 407 cubes. I had to go with a 750 on mine. Let me know if you're interested.

If you haven't messed with it much, let me know how much you want for it. I'd probably be interested.
