After doing my axle work, need to fill her back up. It had some red gear oil in, that looked like really good stuff. Wondering what that was, and how much to add? THanks, Dennis

I take right at 1 gallon. Red stuff was probably a synthetic. I just use 80-90w gear oil in mine but synthetics are always good.

Red stuff is synthetic (probably 50 wt. used in alot of eaton trans. and rockwell rears nowaday...longer life time)

synthetic is a waste of money IMHO. As all but 2 brands arent tru synthetic, they are dino oil based with some synthetic stuff added. Even if it says "full synthetic" they arent. The reason they get away with this is castrol got taken to quart by other oil companies because castrol said theirs was full synthetic when it was really only half. The judge ruled that "synthetic" is just a marketing term and does not mean its fully man made.

So you basically pay 3 times as much for something that is a little bit better in somes ways, and not as good in others.

Whatever it was, it was tacky. After the carrier sat out all day, it still had a thin coat stuck to it like honey. Kinda wish I'd saved it, cause I can see where it would coat and lube bearings and gears.

If you want it to be more tachy, you can just add a pint of STP oil treatment to the gear lube. It can help a lot. I am running some in my tranny to keep it quiet, as the bearings are starting to go in it. I also run it in my T-Case and my front dif.

After it sat all night, I went out today to do some measuring, the stuff is still stuck to the gears. Kinda like fly paper. I can really see that this fluid, whatever type it is, would be great for bearings and such.

Sounds like "Texas Refinery" brand 80-90 weight, it was red in color, used to use it all the time on the farm. Expensive but like you said the stuff doesnt come off easy. We used it in heavy truck rear ends with 2 speeds, to try to make them last longer. A lot of the newer Synthetics are basically the same thing except for the color.
