I'm wondering who here (anyone?) runs a fulltime QT rig (no front locking hubs) with a rear locker and open front diff...
I'd like to hear how the drivability (street and dirt) is on a setup like this when in regular fulltime 4x4 mode and when engaged in e-drive.
Thanks! :D

Is your current QT a part time conversion then?

Now I havent driven one... but I think it would causse quite a bit of stress. As the rear tires would both have to spin at the same speed, this makes for more stress in the center diff. So I think it would cause it to wear out sooner. I also think it would make turning harder, more so then if it was in a 2wd rig.

There's always the option of a selectable locker, that way you've got the best of both worlds.

I'm running a lock right in the rear on my CJ with QT. It's fine on the road and when the E drive is engaged it's almost unstoppable. I love it. You can't run e-drive on the street. It's like running lockers front and rear. It chirps and jumps all over the place and will increase wear and tear.

Agent Orange, Thanx for the info. That's what I needed to hear, and the report was music to my ears. I think my idea will work! This query was not pertaining to my j10, but to another vehicle I intend to build with parts I have at hand... stay tuned for the sickness!

Hint: it will include some sort of v8 powered FSJ (model not decided yet) with fulltime QT, m715 axles with a rear detroit, 44" tires...

Best of luck Joe. If it's anywhere as capable as your J...it's gonna be BAD! :D

ok i gots me a question, if i welded the front diff, and left a hub unlocked on the qt, will it still work ok?

I think so, but I'd rotate the hub that you ran unlocked (one week left unlocked, one week right) so that it would wear evenly...I don't think that it would pull to one side too much, but then again, there is only one way to tell :D

cow catcher I wouldn't reccomend that. Manual locking hubs don't work on QT vehicles not sure why but they stay locked.

you could ot it,but i would highly reccomend against it. you will have unbelievable "torque steer" to the point that it may be unsafe to drive at road speeds. i have driven in "3wd" with a welded front off road, and its not big deal at slow trail speeds, but definately not a good idea for the street.

if you want to weld your front, you would be much better off to unlock both hubs and run in
E drive on te street. that way you have full use of your steering with no torque steer

the only reason that its not reccomended to pur lockouts on a QT equipped rig(or most other full time cases) is simply that if you engage 4wd,or "non E drive" mode with the hubs unlocked, you will potentially burn up the QTs clutch cones,or the viscuous coupling on later models.

i ran a np219(also full time) in my amc eagle with a welded rear and never had a prollem with it on the street. smile.gif

crazy, how will that tear up the QT? the power is unable to spin out the welded diff,so as far the QT is concerned, both front and rear driveshafts are spinning and have resistance.the QT does not realize that only one front is pulling

biggest threat,i see is the torque steer that can cause you to accidentally change lanes when you dont really mean to
