I know that the answer is 208 or an atlas and the 208 is a short term goal and the atlas a long term goal but immediate future I have to use one or the other 228 or 229. Which would you choose and why? Keep in mind I have a non disconnect front dana 44. Thanks ahead of time.

What kind of driving you going to do? Hard to beat the 229 for slippery road/dry road convenience.

Slippery roads aren't really a concern on the NC coast. I am a convert from a TJ and I wheeled it pretty hard. I won't be using 4wd on the street, just offroad.

I had a 229, then a 228, and now a 208. I couldn't tell any difference between the 228 and 229 off-road, even though the 228 has no limited slip and theoretically sould have gotten stuck much easier. Since you don't live in the snow, the 208 is the way to go. Over everything, this was the best upgrade I've made. You can feel it snick into 4WD and really boosted my confidence in the GW in the middle of nowhere.

if you'd pay shipping, I'd sell you my spare NP208 T-case for $100.
Just a thought....
