Power Tailgate won't close 88GW

I can't get my power tailgate to close flush, therefore not allowing me to get the rear window up. That and no cupholders is my main beef with the GW.

The fork-shaped metal prong on the passanger side tailgate itself won't pivit and 'catch' the stud on the inside of the tailgate frame/body. Smashing it with a hammer to jar it didn't work and I can't seem to get inside of the tailgate to fix it. Any thoughts.

I have the exact same problem on the 88 GW I just bought, except it closes enough to allow the window to close. It's the right side of the gate. My local body shop looked at it yesterday and they say part of the mechanism inside the gate is broken. They are looking for a salvage gate to fix it. I'll let you know how it comes out.
