I have a 78 J10 I'm putting a cruise control on it from another 78 J10. I'm using my 78 Cherokee as a guide. On my Cherokee the vacumn line coming into the unit on the fender well has a plastic disk shaped object in line. Does anyone know what it is? Is it a one way valve or some kind of restrictor?

This sounds like a delay valve. Is it colored on one side/white on the other?

I'll have to look, ok I’m back. It's black all the way around. It looks like a dinner plate upside down (flat on one side conical on the other) flat side toward cruise control unit conical side toward vacuum unit on firewall. Conical side says "VAC"

It still sounds like a delay valve like later models use on the lines feeding the EGR valve and vac advance on the dist.I looked at my '88 and it doesn't have one on the vac line feeding the cruise.

What does the delay valve do? Should I disconnect the vac line?

I wouldn't think you would need it for cruise. Some act like a check valve to hold vac on what it's feeding or not supply vac until it reaches a certain level.

My '78 Cherokee also has the delay valve in-line between manifold and cruise box. I'm sure it's stock so it must serve a purpose, but for the life of me I can't come up with one.

Well they won't be identical after you fix the rust and repaint it! Check your "test" post - I thought somebody took mine! ;)
I've got a brother out in Thousand Oaks and another one in Topanga Canyon - one of these days my Chero is going to make the trip west and it'd be pretty cool to get our two Jeeps side by side.

Wow, ya'll have everybody seeing double. Those check/delay valves you are talking about are color coded. Do a search on vacuum in the tech section, the color codes are in there somewhere. BTW My 78 is Pewter Gray.
