My tilt wheel in my GW just started becoming loose. Is this easy to fix? What should I look for. Thanks in advance for any help. The steering wheel is not loose but the colum is.  Its a 1990 GW. :D :D

Steering column must come apart... once you get in there... at the tilt joint is a swivel ball held in by 3 torx bolts... tighten them.... you're done....

remove the 3 bolts and put lock tight on them reinstall them then you are done

But no matter haw big a PITA it is, do it.....2 reasons:
1) Safety
2) If youlet it go on too long, then there are a couple of weird bearing in there that will go. These bearings cost more than 3 replacement steering columns!!! Been there, done that!!!! (didn't buy 3 columns, just couldn't believe that antire column was about a third the price of these stupid bearings!!!!)

my redneck 2 cents.........

There's a good step-by-step how-to in the tech library. You'll need a lock plate compressor - or rig one up. Pay close attention to exactly how all the pieces fit together. I think it was the little plastic gizzy at the top of the dimmer rod that fell out when I wasn't looking and it took me forever to figure how how the h--l the d--m thing fit back! Also, I thought there were 4 torx bolts at the swivel ball.

Special tools:

Steering wheel puller
Lock plate compressor
pivot pin puller

Don't let it go to long, due to the safty concerns.

Hello IronDog
I have looked in all the Tech. libraries but can't seem to find the write up on the column. Can you tell me what's its under? Thanks

yes there are 4 inverted torx head bolts at the swivel ball. i couldnt find a good steering colum locally so i got one out of a 86 s10 pickup after all its nothing but a gm column.and combined the two together i let mine go to long b4 tightening the bolts and the aluminum tilt mount cracked...
it wasnt to bad of a job it took the better part of a afternoon with several regroup yourself carl breaks ....lol. but make sure to locktite and use grease to dimmer switch and swivel joint ...

I had this problem. My mechanic said $50 and he would have it fixed up. So thats how I fixed mine. Anyway it also fixed the problemm of being able to start without the key. I was very happy. I consider my mechanic a good tool.
