Do 1976 Heads on a 401 (or any AMC V8 for that matter) have Hardened Seats?
thanks,

Kong...interestingly enuff, the seats and the heads are hardened....
Case in point, since the seat springs in both my 73 and my 76 FSJs are worn out, bumps in the road (or offroad being much worse  ) do indeed cause a severe hardening of my "seat" (as you called it) as I blow through the travel of the seat springs and bottom out on the floor of the truck.
Solution? remove the seat cover and install a twin size pillow available at most Wal-mart and bedding stores...reinstall the seat cover, and watch as your seat magically becomes less hardened
Hardened heads? INterestingly enough, this is a related matter. The very same seat springs mentinoed in the previous paragraph tend to "launch" the inattentive operator in an upward orientation.
Case in point, while driving my 76 offroad with the windows down, I managed to get the thing moving fast enough that it tilted right and my head went halfway out the window at the exact same time as we went over a bump and the seat impelled my head into the doorframe. Once again, my head was severly hardened from the incident.
So in summary, yes, both the seats and heads of FSJ operators will be hardened unless certain precautions and measures are followed...
...good luck
Jode--
LOL!
The only hardened head in your jeep is sitting on top of your neck!
Just in case you folks are wondering, Joe and I used to work together in a bicycle shop; before Joe got a "real" job ... Joe GAVE me his old 401 for free. Talk about nice FSJers!
I knew the 401 was quite valuable, and I didn't even own a FSJ at the time, so I picked up a nasty 81 for $500. Been working on that 401 ever since...
So next time joe's 401 is headed south, hit joe up for the motor!
Thanks Jode!
