View Full Version : What to use for driveshaft 'loop'?

OK,
After surviving my rear driveshaft falling out from the front (transfer-case), and now that the FSJ's almost back in action, how would someone suggest mounting a 'loop' to catch my driveshaft if that ever happens again? I'm sure I could fashion something, but I just wanted to hear some opinions!

Well I plan on using some of that muffler strap that you can get at any parts store. It has all the holes in it and it is made from aluminum. It is very flexable so if you hit something it will not affect performance. This is just what I am going to use. I am sure there is a better idea out there than mine.

:D I was either going to say that, or just use plumbing strap, virtually the same thing, but available at hardware stores :D

I have been tossing the idea around of a 6" diameter ring about 3" below the yoke and hard mounted to the frame on each side... way up out of the way and won't 'give in' if it is subject to a hit or two...----O----

What I've seen done, is to take a piece of 10-12" pipe, cut a 1" slice off it, cut that in one place, then bend out to form a U providing you a nice solid strap...

Or you could take a tip from the monster trucking world, they seem to just run some pipe attatching to the yoke area of the diff/tcase, about 6" on each side, then nothings flopping around no matter what happens.

just got to thinking about that, the tcase end would probably have to be a tad longer cuz you'd want the WHOLE cv inside it makes greasing etc a PITA, suppose you could cut some holes to make it easier to grease tho... I wont even get into how much of a PITA disconecting the driveshaft from the tcase yoke is!!! Argh! I get frustrated just thinking about it! The Loop mounted to the tcase wouldn't help that...

My buddy just jokingly told me to put a bungee cord under there. I imagine something that would catch the driveshaft a couple inches back from the t-case yoke would work fine. Thanks for the input! I may use the strapping....

Has anyone used seatbelt webbing, I was thinking along the lines of the coil sping travel limiters they use on IFS front end lifts on newer trucks? Thoughts?.

The problem with using webbing or a flexable strap is that if you hit something with it, it will deflect and might hit the spinning shaft. If you had problems with a u-joint breaking think what will happen with a strap or webbing caught in a spinning shaft with good u-joints. It will rip the strap off and pound the hell out of every thing in reach. The piece is pipe with 1/4X1 strap welded to it is probably the best idea. Look in the speed shop catalogs to see what they have, then use that idea to make your own. Remember the loops need to be strong and well anchored.

If I've got a grip on this topic...we are talking about a long heavy chunk of steel rotating at tachometer type speed..The straps I've seen are made of 1/4" x 1" steel..On FSJs with QTs it's at the rear of the FRONT shaft that need the strap to protect the Tranny Case........ ;) ...ds..
