On the way to work yesterday I started hearing a belt squeal. I pulled over and it quit. then on the way home it did it again. Normally my amp gauge stays on zero but it was going up almost to 60. I pulled the belts and everything moved freely. Only thing was that the fan clutch makes a weird noise. The fan clutch wouldn't make the belts squeal would it?

If your alternator belt is loose, it won't charge at all, and when the battery is really low and the alternator starts charging, the amp meter will go all the way up.

The belts were tight and it's a new battery. Never had this prob. It's like something is locking up/seizing up on it. I can never remember but are you supposed to be able to spin your fan freely?

Check your alt. belt real good. I my waggy had areal bad problem with alt. belts. They would only last a few months. It turns out the Kragen replacement alt had a stamped steel pully rather than the cast one and the new one was defectiouse. When I looked closely at it i saw it was kinda bell shapedrather than V like the old one. This was cousing me two snap four alt belts in a year. I replaced it whith a dual pulley set up (cast type).
Yes the fan clutch will let you spin the fan.

The fan will spin but there will be some resistance, it will not spin completely free if my memory serves me correctly. One other wild card would be a pin hole leak spraying coolant on the belts causeing them to slip. They usually don't stay pin hole very long though http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
