View Full Version : Fuel Sender Calibration???

Just bought a fuel sender/pickup from BJ's Offroad (thanks Brent). Question is do these need to be calibrated at all. I have only replaced two and neither was on our rigs. Or should it be fine to just replace it and be done? I really don't want to have to pull the tank a third time plus it really sucks by yourself. Also any tricks to getting the vent grommets in without destroying them? Getting really tired of losing gas at every fill up.
They don't need calibrating but some senders are different than others. You don't mention what rig this is on but early 86 and before are backasswards than late 86 and up. The earlier units read high ohms at empty and the later read high ohms at full.

It's on a 80...I didn't think I needed to do anything but thought I would check anyway.

Check the range on the sender plugged into the dash before you install it, and move the float through it's range, and check the gauge. You could bend the pickup slightly if necessary to match your tank.

Jeepfreak - with "all the trouble" you've been having with that newly acquired Chero, you just need to get rid of that POS and be done with it...in fact, I'll even take it off your hands for ya and give ya a couple bucks for it... I could always use another parts truck :D

YES THEY DO NEED CALIBRATION!
STOP!!!!!
Each sender has a stop tang on the bottom of the reostat housing where the wire bob holder comes out!
According to a Mechanic at Frank Parra Jeep in Dallas and the way I corrected my Gauge problem is the following.
1.With new pick up tube and sender install and drive or drain tank with electric pump until empty.
2.read gauge while on level surface. If gauge reads below empty remove sender and bend tang while gauge is out.. this zereos Gauge to read E perfectly. While gauge is out and Prior to zero Measure drop of Bulb or float.. this is prior to adjusting tang. After adjusting tang measure float again adjustment will most likely be needed to drop bulb to previuos "bulb Zero" The arm or wire holding the float has a bend in it "designed" for adjustment of the float. After
this is done with sender out raise float, with ignition on, to highest setting....visually the float should be the same height as bottom of the top of the sender...it should still be able to travel above that.It should read F or more...the important portion of calibration is absolute E!
OK
Insert Sender install tank or if you are doing this through the view port from inside the Jeep install sender and get a gas tank filled with EXACTLY 2 gallons!!! fill the "empty" tank with 2 gallons. Gauge should read exactly at the beginning of the red near the E.
Enjoy feeling safe about DTE!Distance Till Empty
Remember the tank will still have lots of gas on the bottom even after the pick up refuses to suck up any more gas.....Absolute E is where the sender will not pick up any more fuel.
