I dont want the air conditioning unit anymore on my rig. Up here we only need it maybe a couple weeks out of the year. LOL When I do my rebuild I want to get rid of it. Do I need to take it to a shop or can I do this my self. Electrically its not hooked up and as far as freon etc I dont know if it's charged or not.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Depends on how environmentally friendly (and legal?) you want to be. A service shop can properly remove the freon from the system and I think it can even be recycled.

If you think that there is any freon left in the system take it to an A/C shop so they can remove and recycle the freon. I'm saying this not because I believe in the hole in the ozone theory (bad science at best) but since our mis guided law makers bought it R-12 is no longer made in the U.S. and is getting very expensive. If you have the lic to get it. So please for those of us with old R-12 a/c's that can buy freon have the system discharged at a shop so that what you have can be reused. :D :D :D

You should have the freon removed at a shop if there is any.Does it put out cold air, if it does there is freon in it.

everything else can be removed by you fairly easy!

You can probably sell it, or at least have a shop do the work for keeping the R-12, Its pretty expensive stuff in the states.
If you just want it off, open the low pressure fittings slowly to see if its charged, and don't inhale any. But you should take it in for discharge.

Take a deep breath of air, with pocket knife in hand, and jab a hole in the side of one of the hoses. Walk away and breath normal. Come back in an hour, and you have just discharged your a/c system, and you can remove to your hearts content.

Not very Enviromentally sound advice there Hump. That was the procedure 20+ years ago. Now it and most everything else we used to do is illegal. (try buying a stick of dynamite at the local hardware store)
Jambo1, would be interested in the interior parts of your A/C if you want to get rid of it.

I care about the enviroment, but some laws are retarded, and this is one of them. How many people in the U.S will be discharging freon a year?? Not many.

Before you know it, you will have to get your oil changed by a shop because the shop's disposal can be regulated by the government.

I heard its a 10,000 fine if a neighbor reports your freon release.
