I picked up a set of spare diffs over the weekend and I dis-assembled/ cleaned etc... Anyone got specs (torque) for bearing caps, pinion crush/pre-load, wheel bearing pre-load. The d44 I got doesn't have the vacumn control for 4X and I'd really like to swap it out just to delete the extra vacumn lines. All I got for specs is a s--tty Haynes manual that doesn't give these specs. Also, anyone know where to get 1 piece axles for the amc 20 or the 5/8" (I think) square head socket for removing the hub from the axles (I'll try snap-on tomorrow when he comes by the shop).

What did the axles come out of? If it was a FSJ the AMC 20 would already have one piece axles. I will get the Specs up in a few.

The axles came out of another cherokee (around the same year...83), but I noticed on the 20 that there was/is a 5/8 square head plug (like a drain plug) at the end of the axle/beginning of hub. I didn't attempt to seperate these. I could always weld a nut to the d-mn thing and pull it that way. I checked with the snap-on dealer here today and 1/2" is the largest in 1/2" drive and 3/8" is the largest in 3/8" drive. It isn't a one piece because the hubs and axles are splined.

Two piece axles were never used on the AMC 20 in FSJ's All AMC 20's used in FSJ's have that square indent, no idea why, its just there

Thanks for that info. I'd hate to go and destroy a perfectly good pair of axles (I'd stop once I f'd up the 1st one).
